Total War Saga: Troy is the latest title from Creative Assembly which recently launched on the Epic Games Store and was free to keep for the first 24 hours. The game was claimed by over 7.5 million people in this initial 24 hour period with 1 million claims within the first hour alone. The giveaway exceeded the expectations of Creative Assembly who wanted to introduce their games to a wider audience. The giveaway was made possible through a partnership with Epic Games and means that the game will remain an Epic Games Store exclusive until August 13th, 2021 when it launches on Steam. If you missed the giveaway and want to purchase the game it is currently available for £35/$50.

Considering the game was free literally the day it launched, i would assume so.
7.5m times 50$ is easy money for Epic to cover, if such contract exist between them.

True, but no way that epic will pay full price for a game to give it for free, epic will use the power of money to offer them this sum of money in advance to give for free and keep it in their store for 6 months max, is the game good anyway? never played any of them. they are pushing really hard for people to use their store, but even if you keep giving free games forever people still need a good platform to use, money isn't everything.

Even if Epic gave them $15 to 20 per download. Considering this is a SAGA title and uses the Warhammer 2 Total War Engine its essentially a spin-off title thus smaller dev team and less cost involved. This means Epic likely paid The Creative Assembly / SEGA around 110 to 150 million.

Meaning Sega / The Creative Assembly has already made a larger profit than the game would likely have grossed on its own. Even if you go with a worst case scenario of $10 per download thats still 75 million and likely exceeds the development cost.

I am going to assume you are not exactly familiar with the popularity of Total War series.

Every single TW title since Empire use the Warscape engine.

Well, considering TW features haven't changed noticably in the last decade (different eras, but still the same stale field) I'd say so.

No shit,

Buts it using an older version with the tools / features already ironed out. They aren't trying to improve or adapt new code. For example When Thrones of Brittania came out The first Warhammer Total War was already available. However, Thrones of Brittania used the older Atilla version of Warscape so it was heavily single threaded where as the version used for Warhammer was much better optimized.

Same applies to this title, Troy uses an older version of the engine to save on time / dev cost everything is already set in stone. As of now Troy = Warhammer 2 engine rather than the version used by Three Kingdoms. This means improvements made for the latest full title won't be a part of Troy.

The fact that a Total War Game was free at launch is astounding. The fact that Steam has to wait a year to make it available to all the new Asian users that jumped in at Three Kingdoms is amazing.

I tried playing it for a few days. But gave up. Interface is way to cluttered for me.
Constant interruptions (might be easy to turn off dunno) with boxes taking up
half the screen and covering the interface. Nah not for me. But thank you for
another free game.

7,499,999 people will be waiting 6+ months for this POS game to be patched to be playable.

I played it and it sucks. Unit upkeep is crazy high and everyone loves to declare war on you. I played it for about 5 hours and deleted, I even used a cheater trainer program and still couldnt win when I turned it off, because unit upkeep is very high.
It adds value to this epic game account that I have that I havent sent 1 cent and its made me money.
thanks epic.
