NVIDIA's second fastest "Ampere" graphics card to launch this year, the GeForce RTX 3080, surfaced on the Userbenchmark database. Hardware Leaks (aka @_rogame) fished out several juicy details about the card that will be positioned right below the flagship RTX 3090 (RTX 2080 Ti successor) that's been in the news lately. The RTX 3080 succeeds the RTX 2080. On the Userbenchmark database, the purported RTX 3080 is shown bearing a device ID "10DE 2206." Among its readable specs leaked are a GPU frequency of up to 2.10 GHz, possibly frequency capped just like "Turing," and 10 GB of GDDR6X memory across a 320-bit wide memory interface, and a memory clock speed of 19 Gbps (GDDR6X effective), which works out to 760 GB/s of memory bandwidth.

It's good to finally know is 10gb, I will skip this one then , hope the 3080 ti has at least 12gb, looking ahead, anything less than 12gb for 4k or 8k is useless. 12GB minimum, 16GB looks ideal for the time being.

3080 succeeds the RTX 2080.
3080 succeeds card that is priced close to 3080.
That is if 3080 is around $699, then indeed it "suceeds" 2080.

And if it is not, it's not really a "successor" either, just marketing "level up" trick.

memory clock speed of 19 Gbps
Could we call it "bandwidth" instead?

I don't know what kinds of games you're playing, but I've never seen a game exceed 6.5GB-7GB of VRAM usage at 4K with 125% render resolution with my 2080 Ti. Maybe it could be argued for 8K, but then again, who plays at 8K, and who will in the foreseeable future play at 8K?... 4K still isn't the standard, 8K won't be for at least 5-6 years, at which point we'll probably be some generations ahead. For now, 10GB is plenty for any kind of gaming workload that I can think of.

The only thing I can imagine 8GB+ being useful for is if the SSD tech that consoles use being "emulated" on PC with VRAM instead of a dedicated SSD. In that case, the more VRAM the better. But then we're probably talking needing tens of gigabytes, if not hundreds. The PS5 and Xbox Series X are almost a terrabyte of blazing fast storage (825GB for the PS5, 1TB for the Series X), I don't think 16GB would suffice for that sort of task

16GB ain't happening at least until Ampere refreshes, and even then you could have doubts about higher capacities. Its not like consoles (while doing pseudo 4K) are going to eclipse that and you're already seeing a shift to what 4K really is going to become - lots of internal resolution sliders and dynamic resolution for assets, along with LoD and other trickery, most of which results in blurriness or at least reduced fidelity. Also consider DLSS., which I think might become a defining feature in bringing big games to console parity with a manageable GPU expense. It is Nvidia's way to fight back against console optimization, in a way.

As for capacity though, I think its not the big worry. If you look at the real differentiator for Nvidia's top end, its not so much capacity - past TWO generations are stuck at 11GB. What we are getting now, is tremendous increases in throughput/bandwidth which makes sense if you consider RT's much more dynamic resource requirement. GDDR6X is starting to catch up to HBM2.

I think 10GB will be fine for the next 2-3 years, but it would be nice to have a 20GB model for those who want more. 699$ for the 10GB model and 899$ or something like that for the 20GB model seems fair.

That 10gb on 3080 tell us that the price will be just a little higher than 2080, I call it around $849. The 3090 will be around $1299. I miss those days high end gpus like 3090 were priced $499.

I think they will make the 3090 more attractive than the 3080 in that department, reason of rumored 24gb.

It's more likely Nvidia just bumps it up to 12GB/14GB/16GB not sure which, but could very well be any of those possibly even 18GB. I'm very skeptical if Nvidia going higher than that unless it's a Titan SKU outside of the Quadro's that sell for a arm, leg, and kidney.

yeah, i mean 24gb for 3090 is kind odd, is too much, even 20gb is a lot, maybe they want to justify the price they will put on it.

Every time a discussion starts abut GPU memory capacity, I feel like I am reading a sci-fi book. People throwing in 10/12/14GB not being enough or minimum, meanwhile I am still rocking my RX580 4GB version, which was super cheap when I got it. Can't even get a Vega with 8GB yet, cause prices ain't right for second hand right now.

Up to 12gb really seems to small for next gen, but bandwidth matters and up to 1000gb/s is more than plenty.

Try flying online in DCS world at max settings at 4K. Vram usage on 1080TI gets to 11GB (100%) and DDR4 to 29 GB on certain maps. The same is true for Space Engine. It fills VRAM to 100% then starts to stutter until older textures get erased from the memory. The other game that uses more than 10 GB of ram is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 (closed beta version). It filled all the 1080ti's vram when flying over big cities with lots of traffic in 4K ultra, this resulted in stutters. I also tested FS 2020 with Radeon VII from my rendering workstation and and vram ended up peaking at nearly 15 GB. So yes, 16 GB Vram should be a minimum on high end GPUs in 2020 and forward.

Important side note: if that is the sort of game you play and only if it is not optimized around a maxed VRAM of 10-11 GB. Most/many games solve the capacity problem with streamed assets and content, allowing higher bandwidth to make up for lacking capacity, and it is obviously the more economical approach, especially when you've hit a limit on the number of chips you can place next to the socket.

The vast, if not overwhelming majority of games can do just fine within 10GB (and has lots of headroom, even at 4K we see games cap out (=/= actually required, but 'in use') around 9-10GB, as they did the past years. We now know that Micron can only supply 1GB chips so 16GB is probably not happening soon, but may very well happen in a refresh as GDDR6X gets improved.

So Navi is supposed to bring 16GB. It will be interesting to see how they do that, but if they do it with slower memory... you might have your capacity but not your performance. I think you're stuck waiting for a refresh with higher capacities I'm afraid, if you want to really make a dent for the future.

The more obvious route however is that Flight sims adjust the way they load and serve from VRAM. Its not particularly efficient as they do it now and you can't expect GPU to scale with that inefficiency either. Another solution is to not jump on early adopter resolutions and then stack the heaviest texture load imaginable on top, expecting all will be well :) It obviously won't and you can't expect the market to happily cater to the 1% of your niche. OTOH... at least you've got something to look forward to, I suppose :p

I'd be surprised if it's more than 14GB short of a Titan or Quadro SKU especially if the RTX3080 is 10GB that to me leads me to believe the RTX3090 would be either 12GB or 14GB depending on just how much wider a bus width they wanted to utilize which probably depends on the chip quality between the two just how much more cut down is the RTX3080!? I mean who knows it's anyone's guess and I wouldn't be shocked at all if they add another SKU in between those two eventually with like 11GB or 12GB to plug any gaps they can. The last Nvidia wants to do is sell more RTX3080 than they possible must so if they have room to throw in a RTX3085Ti down the road by binning some chips to save to launch down the line they likely will because Jensen needs a new leather jacket.

3080ti will be the gap in price between the 3080 and 3090, The 3080 will be 10gb which for me is too low, 3090 will be 24gb which for me is too much, here is hoping a 3080ti will come along with 12gb or 16gb.

That might be Huang's way of "replacing": "it is more expensive... but it ends with the same number and it is faster than the last card that ended with the same number, just look how much faster it is".
