..But why should I be expected to buy my Origin games for a 2nd time in order to run them through Steam (with full Steam Integration) ?

Simply using the 'Import Non Steam Game' is in no way the same thing.

People who have paid EA for these games in Origin should be given Steam activation keys for their library of games that are now in Steam.

I paid for the game, not the platform they happen to run on.

Why would you suddenly run them through Steam in the first place, is the real question.

The notion that a storefront should somehow provide QoL and services is straight up crazy. You can have that locally. Just let the launchers download the data and that's that.

Or, you know... don't... and then keep suffering from it in the way you describe - trust me, being all disgruntled customer-y about it won't change a thing. This will only get worse.

Because the Origin launcher sucks donkey balls compared to Steam.

I agree. But having Origin started up in the background anyway, why not link your games to one other launcher that is not store-linked? Playnite, for example. Those double DRM layers will pop up no matter what. What you'd want is to work around the launcher entirely, right? All you really need is click an icon that works.

Link to Steam and you will require two servers to respond as well, or you're left going through Steam's offline gateway before you can play. That's a whole lot more work than either Origin or Playnite will present you...

Why would you suddenly run them through Steam in the first place, is the real question.

I only have Steam running in the background out of all my launchers, as all my online MP games are launched from Steam. Prevents having a game download eating up all the bandwidth as Steam doesn't patch while a game is running. If I had Origin/Uplay etc all running as well they could well be patching at a bad time, so I don't launch them unless I want to play a game specifically on their launcher, which invariably needs a patch whenever I go to launch them. If I have those games through Steam then it will ensure they're up to date without me worrying about an unplanned patch ruining my online gaming.

Can't you just block automatic downloads in every launcher? AFAIK you can. I do, anyway. Even Steam doesn't automatically download anything other than Dota 2 because it'll be required anyway to play.

Most stuff I don't even want auto updated because it can totally destroy modding as well. (Tw Warhammer for example...) But yea. Choice of evils again...

I am glad EA is making move to Steam, but they are doing it wrong. None of us want EA Origin running in background as a third party app to run games from another third party app. EA you are doing it wrong. Just move it all to Steam, no background crap running, no other apps launching, etc.

Sigh.

GOG for life boys!

I can but then when I want to play a game I'd have to wait for it to patch.. If I have Steam set to auto download every game I have then it is ready to play whenever I want. I could block the other launchers sure, but again I end up in a situation when I want to play a game but can't thanks to needing a multi-gig patch first.

Mod support I get, but you can select individual games to not patch in Steam if that's a concern.

I'm just explaining why it can be much better to have one launcher responsible for patching all my games, instead of several different ones, and thus being able to have all my origin games in steam directly is much better than having some in steam and some in origin.

Gotcha. But if you run it all through Steam its more of the same isn't it. After all, Steam won't DL when you're playing something. So in a practical sense, you could also just get your stuff updated on the regular ONLY when you click a button to do so. Even through Steam you'll be left waiting for multi GB downloads. I see it almost daily. Its not fire and forget at all. It just automates that one action of clicking 'update your stuff'.

Steam is always running on my machine and patches games as soon as an update is released assuming I'm not in another game at the same time, so all my games are always up-to-date and patched in Steam. I never have to wait for a patch before playing any of my steam games, so it's not more of the same for Steam managed game installs.

Understood, yeah, I don't autorun Steam either. Decisively old-school... stuff only happens when I say go :D

Pretty nice, especially that you don't need to play the game again to get the achievements.

Check the "allow downloads during gameplay", problem solved. I also have Steam, Origin, Uplay, Epic, Battlenet... you name it, run at startup and stay in the background.

But I don't want downloads during gameplay - my comment was specifically about not wanting that, and thus having origin and uplay running at the same time as steam would mean I would get downloads while playing as the other launchers aren't aware if a game is being played. Thus the comment that if steam could manage all of my game installs I would have all my games patched, and not have patches downloading while in a multiplayer game..

Yeah multiplayers are a different thing, but in general, that saves time when stuff is downloading in background when playing a singleplayer game.

Score! Time to run around and get digital thumb ups in a game! I'll be a winner and my digital ego is going to get a big pat on the back! Yeah!

Remember the days when you played games to play them and not get a trophy every time you logged in?

I wouldn't mind trophies in PS2 games to be honest.
