Considering everything will be coming out of China from Apple I don't know about any advantages for build quality.

Apple actually forced Foxconn to build and then expand factories in India. The move has been going on since 2015 and recent events are just accelerating that. The shift is expected to eventually create 1M jobs in India.

Foxconn is a Taiwanese company. There are those that call it Chinese but that is a political statement, not a factual one.

Apple is making / building a plethora of reasons to go to their platforms. It is baked into their charter / strategy, they are primarily a hardware manufacturer and everything they do is meant to forward the goal of selling more hardware. So, when apple makes a search engine it will ultimately be about selling more Apple hardware.
This stopped being true when they wrote iTunes. They still sell hardware, but they're also a software/services company now. I mean, whatever you do on their platform, they get 30%. That's a higher margin than hardware commands even after you factor in the costs of running their store.

In the real world, things are not black and white. What you are saying would be like saying Google stopped being an advertising platform when they launched the Nexus.

The vast, vast majority of Apple's income is from hardware sales. Don't confuse the tail with the dog.

$56bn from iPhone sales, $46bn from services. And that's revenue, I'm pretty sure services are way more profitable.

This isn't politics bud, reading comprehension matters. From the very article you linked to :

"For fiscal year 2019, the company's iPhone business accounted for approximately 54.7% of total sales. Apple’s growing services segment made up approximately 17.7% of revenue, ahead of the Mac, which generated 9.8% of total revenue. "

You might also want to look into what those services are. They include things like warranties for their hardware (Apple's vaunted AppleCare).

No body can beat google as search Engine.
While this can be argued, there is a reason why people say "Google it" instead of "go search for it". That said, there are several very good alternatives to Google, and I'm not counting Bing. DuckDuckGo is excellent and very rarely fails to find anything Google would find.

So what do you understand from that? Because the way I read it is both hardware and software are significant sources of revenue for Apple these days. That's enough for me to stop calling Apple a hardware company.

So if OnStar makes money for General Motors, you gonna stop calling GM a car manufacturer? OnStar (a subsidiary) is worthless without GM cars. Apple services would be worthless without iPhones and Macs.

Getting these the relevance of these things confused is what I was referring to about the tail and the dog. These services are all about enhancing the value of their primary product - a car, a phone, a Mac.

Google's primary product is its customer.

That's just idiotic.
How can I be Google's product if Google hasn't sold me to anyone so far?

Folks, Google didn't invent the search engine. They put figured out how to build one. They they figured out how to get better results. It's not just a patented PageRank system. It's having words paired up into phrases, and some manual adjusting by employees to figure out what a searcher was really intending to find.

Applebot, the web spider, has been around since 2015. That means they've had an internal web search system for that long. If they want to productize that and make it public, maybe it'll be legit. Lots of Apple fans (not I) will roll with it.

If you want to develop your own company and innovate in certain areas, you need your own web spider and search engine so your secrets and interests stay within your own walls in so much as they can. Apple, whatever you think of them, has at least got people smart enough to see that.

When Google began they were using 30GB IDE hard drives. Now, we laugh at that. Now, we're solid state. Times have changed and Google has gone from contender to emperor. Myself, I like a lot of Google stuff. Although, I take them to be an omnivore. Their size and the power they could wield makes one want to take steps to not turn over so much power. (Same with Amazon.)

There's always room for a better system.
