FSP Rolls Out "Ampere Cable," Converts 2x 8-pin 12V to 12-pin Connector

FSP today rolled out the "Ampere Cable," an accessory that converts two 8-pin PCIe inputs from modular PSUs to the 12-pin Molex MicroFit connector standard introduced to the client segment by NVIDIA and its GeForce RTX 3000 "Ampere" Founders Edition graphics cards. The cables are compatible with any modular PSU that has 8-pin 12 V connectors that put out 8-pin PCIe. It should work with all FSP branded modular PSUs, as well as modular PSUs of other brands that use Fortron as their OEM source. FSP is Fortron's DIY channel brand. FSP is setting up web-forms for existing owners of FSP power supplies to claim a free unit.

Are Nvidia not including one of these in the box with their FE cards?

Those FE cards seem to be the only cards announced or leaked to use this 12-pin connector and it looks like a 'standard' that solves just one particular design flaw - the FE weird angular PCB that not a single OEM or AIB will use for their own products.

AIBs have never hand a problem putting 450W of PCIe power connector in a nice neat row on any of their 'normal' rectangular PCBs and they're unlikely to want to deal with the added hassle of converting their production lines to deal with 12-pin vertical connectors just for a fraction of their GPU portfolio...

They're including an adapter that converts existing two PCIe or EPS12V to a single 12-pin.

This cable plugs directly into an FSP power supply so there is no need to adapt.

No I think JG is right, these cables plug into the modular backplane of any FSP modular PSU.

Correct. Many companies, like beQuiet, define their modular cable pinout. Only slackers like EVGA say, "use whatever".

Seasonic also uses standard 8pin plug layout. That's why it's so easy to make some custom cables for their SPs.

Umm.. No.

There is no "standard" for the PSU side of a modular cable. Even Seasonic has changed their PCIe connections three times in the last decade. And not all Seasonic made PSUs use Seasonic's pinout. Example: Corsair AX Series.
