Today there is a little bit of nostalgia to be brought for your reading pleasure. In the early days of dot com boom, when the internet was taking off, there was a service called Napster which allowed users to download entire music albums in MP3 format for free. Logically you needed an MP3 player to listen to these songs and there came Winamp - the most popular MP3 player at the time with a lot of features like sound equalizer, bitrate adjustment, and more. The users of this piece of software especially liked it because of the one thing - customization. You could have applied all kinds of skins to it, and users distributed a lot of them online. From anime to TV shows, you could find all kinds of skins for it. So to honor the software, there is now an online museum containing over 65.000 skins that you can view in JPG format and download to apply to your Winamp application. You can check out the museum here.

I've been using Winamp all these years every single day. Minimized to the tray and not sucking up a full item's worth of space on my crowded task bar. Good software never expires.

I remember making my first MP3 back in like 1998. Ripped AC/DC - Thunderstruck. Took essentially all day to encode on a Pentium 150MMX. I remember going "Shit." and just got up and left the PC to grind away. Wasn't long after and I built my first home rig based on a Pentium II 400Mhz. That let me do entire albums, although I feel like it was still a chore, but it was hard drive space that was the issue at that point IIRC.

Made some good money at the end of highschool burning custom CDs for people.

Winamp - whip that lamas ass :peace:. I have used Winamp since like 2001 and I am still using it every time I am on my pc. I think Winamp is one of my most used software even after all these years and yes it works great on windows 10 if anyone shut be curious about it.

I use this skin called anunaki: https://www.wincustomize.com/explore/winamp/1269/

If you ask me, Winamp is still one of the best software for playing mp3 files.

Ah, nostalgia. I used WinMX instead of Napster.

Also, Spider Player was my replacement for Winamp, still use it to this day.

Winamp has a huge nostalgia factor :)
I used it for casual playlists until I discovered Foobar2000.
The Winamp ram usage footprint was ridiculous IF you had a big media library.
Foobar was and is still is much lighter on resources. even with 20-40 plugins.

there is one problem with continuing to use winamp('s old input format plugins), security issues can & probably exist

this is true for basically all software that opens files especially if it was made with old or inexperienced coding practices, it goes beyond the user opening files to also include the OS displaying thumbnails on files

WinAmp has Linux successor: QMMP, and it can use WinAmp2 skins. I made a few QMMP skins in Krita, here they are.
audacious also loads the skins

both of them have windows versions, not linux specific

Ah, nostalgia. I used WinMX instead of Napster.
winmx came after napster

(what about audiogalaxy, morpheus, or soulseek which is still up)
