Intel has been preparing the launch of its 10 nm processors for desktop users for some time now, and today we are getting the first pictures of the Alder Lake-S CPU backside. Featuring a package with a size of 37.5×45 mm, the Alder Lake CPU uses more of its area for a pin count increase. Going up from 1200 pins in the LGA1200 socket, the new Alder Lake-S CPU uses 1700 CPU pins, which slots in the LGA1700 socket. In the picture below, there is an engineering sample of the Alder Lake-S CPU, which we see for the first time. While there is no much information about the processor, we know that it will use Intel's 10 nm SuperFin design, paired with hybrid core technology. That means that there will be big (Golden Cove) and little (Gracemont) cores in the design. Other features such as PCIe 5.0 and DDR5 should be present as well. The new CPU generation and LGA1700 motherboards are scheduled to arrive in second half of 2021.

Glad to see gen 5 support, if true :D

Second half of 2021? If they're both on schedule, that'll make Rocket Lake's tenure similarly short to Kaby Lake's. Can't help but feel a bit disappointed that Cypress Cove only gets such a short window - obviously RKL brings a lot more to the table than KBL, but I guess the investors are going to tear Intel a new asshole if desktop doesn't move to SuperFin soon.

So begins the end of easily manageable thermal density, I guess. Yeah, 14nm needs a dedicated electric power plant to keep it going, but at least its thermal characteristics are straightforward and logically tied to power draw.

Can't wait to see how the OS manages these different cores for different tasks, etc. Really love the idea even on desktop.

nice, BIG/Little is a great idea for desktop plus PCIe 5 and DDR5 cant wait to see tests of this, hold onto your hat AMD me thinks.

Given the sea of bugs that CRYSIS REMASTERED has, Intel has plenty of time to start with a good 10 nm processor sproduction . Since the game went they haven't fixed the SLI bug, a double transparent image like I'd like to play with 3d glasses, rectangular light reflections. the imprint of the face in the picture, and so on!

What does Intel have to do with an SLI bug? SLI is an Nvidia feature. And dual gpu is now more of a DX12 feature.

Can't wait to see what Intel brings to the table in 2021. Their 10nm node should be smaller than TSMC's 7nm. Although I don't really care about who's on what nm node.

The CPU is bigger that's for sure. Wonder why since Intel is going for the smaller cores. Probably bigger cash size?

Looks like 2021 could be a great year for cpu cooler manufacturer, after 775 and 115x coolers were mostly compatible abd updated mounting for AM4 was delivered with just a couple of new screws and clamps by most companies. Finally intel thinks not only of the mobo manufacturer every two years, but this round even the cooler companies get there share ;)

What does Intel have to do with an SLI bug?

I'm still trying to understand what has to do a new Intel launch with the bugs on Crysis, because wtf.

Oh wow. So Intel is going to attack the Consumer MSDT market with HEDT pro sized Threadripper equivalents now.

:roll::roll::roll::roll:
Whats next, dual socket quad cores?

Don't see them releasing in 2021 if Rocket Lake and Z590 aren't arriving until March. Maybe on mobile. Unless, of course, this is supposed to be a HEDT platform.

Clearly you 2 didnt read post #2

@bogami You should quote who ever you're talking to. Avoids confusion between inattentive readers (no pan intended)

I recall posts saying PCIE Gen 5 would only be for data center, but a few articles recently say it is coming with Alder Lake. The notebookcheck article, in particular, even states PCIE5 lanes are in Alder Lake P.

I haven't seen any PCIE5 devices listed by Intel other than some Agilex FPGAs and their Ponte Vecchio GPU.

Anyone have opinions on why they are bringing PCIE5 to a desktop chip?
Does this hint that their discrete client GPUs will support PCIE5?
Could PCIE5/CXL be used between CPUs as a replacement for UPI on desktop?

Rocket Lake will be push much more gaming prformance than amd ryzen, remembe this, its also intel last 14nm cpu.

10nm intel Adler Lake will finaly 'show' it,i mean how 'good' or 'bad' amd ryzen 7nm cpu really are when competition use almost same core size.
amd has still handicap advance but still...

i say, 10nm Adler Lake Hybrid cpu start absolutly new performance and efficency level.

so we seen next intel side, bang and really big bang:

14nm intel Rocket Lake VS 7nm amd ryzen vermeer (zen3)

and finaly,march 2021:

10nm intel Adler Lake Hybrid VS 7nm amd ryzen vermeer (zen3)
i mean intel 10nm VS amd 7nm

im exited,..its just matter of time.

example,it is nice to see, what are intel Adler Lake cpu bost hertz? i guess 6ghz...

Patent lawsuits coming in... 3... 2... :|

When they sue anyone for daring to bundle a pump and jet plate... Though apparently the USPTO thinks a pump ramming coolant directly through fins is special...

I wouldn't have a problem if Asstek would innovate instead of just charging those fat patent dollars for the old ass and crap design. Innovate once and sue for the next few decades...

The result is there's not many options for a big company in North America. They get one choice and shit performance.

. Don't think of PCIe 5.0 as JUST max potential of an x16 slot. Think about it as being able to use less lanes for more. So now an x16 lane is more useful and viable. It lets you use less lanes for more connectivity because there can't be infinite lanes.
