Plextor Unveils M8V Plus Series SATA SSDs

Plextor late last week unveiled the M8V Plus line of mainstream SATA SSDs in the 2.5-inch and M.2-2280 form-factors. The M8V Plus is an incremental update of the original M8V series from 2018. What's new is the implementation of KIOXIA-sourced 96-layer TLC NAND flash replacing 64-layer chips from Toshiba. The M8V Plus series comes in 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB variants, while the original M8V came in 128-thru-512 GB variants.

The Silicon Motion SM2258 controller under the hood of the M8V Plus, has been updated to its latest revision, and supports Plextor-innovated Plex Compress technology. This feature uses the controller's idle time to compress files that haven't been accessed for over 30 days. The Plex Turbo feature, which is essentially variable-size SLC cache, has also been improved to be larger in size. On-paper performance hasn't changed, with the company claiming up to 560 MB/s sequential reads, up to 520 MB/s sequential writes, up to 90,000 IOPS 4K random access for the 256 GB and 512 GB variants; and up to 88,000 IOPS random access for the 1 TB variant. The company rates write endurance for the 256 GB variant at 140 TBW, 512 GB variant at 280 TBW, and 560 TBW for the 1 TB variant. All three variants are backed by 3-year warranties. The company didn't reveal pricing.

Viable, yes.. for some people...

Worth me investing in, N.O.P.E.... simply because I choose speeeed/performance over capacity, since my local storage needs are not that great, but my time is very valuable

And no, I am not going to get into some convoluted discussion about read/write speeds or whatever. I just know that I like & utilize the performance of my m.2's way more than I ever did with any SATA drive...and since I have 2x M.2 slots on my mobo + 4 moar on my hyper M.2 card, thats why I said "yawn"

And no, I am not going to get into some convoluted discussion about read/write speeds or whatever. Well I have every possible storage port occupied so 8 drives total 2 NVME 3 SSD and 3 HDD you’re not special and that hat includes one RAID0 areay and one Raid1 Array. Being so dsmisI’ve of SSDs is just shallow and elitist as your usUWP comments are with no legit reason to back it up tour Hyper card doesn’t make you special or justifies your usual dismissI’ve generic yawns... im fully utilizing my available PCI lanes for storage they all don’t have to be “the fastest“ but they do have to be practical which SSDs are.

Well, calling me names isn't going to change the fact that "practical" to me is whatever works best, which in this case is M.2 drives....

That's not being elitist, it's just my reality... time is money, and anything that saves me time means moar money for me & my company...

As for dismissive, YES I am, especially towards companies that burn R&D time & money trying to improve upon what is essentially a soon-to-be-dead tech. I would much rather see them spend it on current/upcoming tech, like better/faster controllers, NAND, and larger capacities etc...

I expected moar from a well-known, well-respected company like Plextor, thats all ...
