SilverStone Intros Nightjar NJ700 Fanless PSU

SilverStone today introduced the Nightjar NJ700, a premium power supply that's completely fanless. This 700-Watt PSU boasts of Cybenetics Titanium and 80 Plus Titanium switching efficiency ratings; and on virtue of being fanless, bags Cybenetics Acoustic A++ rating. It features a single +12 V rail design, with 100% Japanese capacitors, and ±2% voltage regulation, and ripple suppression. It offers full modular cabling, with enough juice and straws for a fairly powerful gaming PC. Connectors include a 24-pin ATX, two 4+4 pin EPS, four 6+2 pin PCIe power, twelve SATA power, and a handful 4-pin Molex and Berg connectors. The PSU offers active PFC, and protection against over/under-voltage, overload, overheat, and short-circuit. The company didn't reveal pricing.

It's mostly a down-rated 1200W or higher PSU design, so it should be fine. It's going to be expensive though.

If thats true adding a fan to the unit should make it a full fledged 1200w unit, assuming they didnt add any limiters.

Well I have a 620 watt Seasonic platinum rated PSU for a long time now, it has that Hybrid fan, the one that only turns on when it needs to and... i have never ever seen the fan spin, not a single time.

It's indeed a true Seasonic design, so everything to worry about. Their current lineup is the worst in a long time. I'm surprised you don't know of all the problems Seasonic has with their current PSU's.

All certainly not. I know of shutdowns with high end RTX 3xxx problem and assume it's fixed in used revision (and it's prob not a very relevant use case for fanless PSU anyways)

Sadly it isn't really fixed, problems are still there in the current revision. It's not just the RTX 3000 series it's all high-end graphics cards by the way.

It's also relevant, simply because it's a 700W power supply. If you're only gonna use it as a 400W power supply, you could have bought a 400W power supply.

Annecdotal claims are worth the paper they are printed on. The RTX 3000 shutdown issue happened on multiple brands, not just seasonic. Do you have a source for all of seasonic's supplies having these issues?

And buying a powersupply rated for exactly what you need with 0 overprovisioning is, quite frankly, really stupid. Show me 80+ titanium rated 400 watt power supplies. The highest you can get at that range is platinum, which has no requirements for sub 30% efficiency, and a platinum 400 watt costs mroe then a platinum rated 600 watt supply.

Can't you just orientated it so the heat dissipation rises into the case and can't get trapped rising into the PSU components get trapped and drifting out the rear of the case and partially drifting into the case in the first place anyway. That's what I do on my Seasonic fanless. I'd be more worried about it being top mounted. I've had it in two case top mounted and bottom mounted and it strikes me as less concerned bottom mounted between the two by a long shot.

I mean it was torture tested at 0 over provisioning in hot box made of wood with no fans for unrealistic time period followed by a 1500w hair dryer intentionally trigger the over heat temperature protection on it half a dozen times and hear no evil see no evil say no evil. I get what you're saying, but I'll probably chance it up to a point based on what I've read on more than one notable review site the the thing is built sturdy as a brick sh*t house for extreme conditions. Generally speaking I'd agree with what you're saying, but I know for fact this fanless PSU quality designed and tested to match or exceed it's official ratings. If it'll at least handle what it claims of 400w beyond is debatable, but it's overbuilt and a bit of non passive cooling it can easily handle more is the consensus. Silent PC said it could easily be rated for 700w and frankly I believe them based on the testing it went through. Based on my experience and what I've read I'll vouch for Seasonic's fanless PSU's short of a fluke case here or there and unless the quality has gotten worse over time not better with modern designs of them by Seasonic they are magnificently crafted. I can't speak about SilverStone Nightjar's personally, but I've similarly seen and read good things as well for them in turn. Both seem like a pretty safe bet for a fanless PSU they are leaders of the pack in these less common and extreme PSU design categories. I forget what the situation is with AMP rails on PSU's in regard to PSU's, but I remember them being beef cake on this PSU. I think it's the +12v rail that was most critically important?
