I was a long time Artic MX user, but recently switched to Mastergel Maker because it was out of stock when I really needed it. Damn, Mastergel Maker is really good, even better than MX with the exact same cooling configuration.

You buy MX5 if you don't care about temps THAT MUCH unless they were REALLY BAD to begin with. And obviously if you want a no-nonsense application which is often something you'll do on GPUs and laptops. For anything else you'll want gallium based TIMs which comes with its own sets of ISSUES, UPKEEP and RISKS if you don't know what you're doing.

I've used both CLU and MX4 with mixed usage (as noted above) for almost a decade and haven't ever looked back. CLU was especially a game changer on laptops back during the SB days because cooling was so-so. And anyone who did h264 encodes on the go can atest to that during that era.

Agreed. The biggest difference I saw moving from ye old AS5 to something like IC diamond was on a high end GPU, where the IC diamond was 4C cooler under load thanks to the bare die. For CPUs it really doesnt make a big difference anymore, they're all within 1-2C unless you go liquid metal. And given the tiny difference the cheap AS5 at $7 is a better deal then this $15 a tube MX5.

That's because the Extreme comes only in one size. It's the size that makes it more expensive. If it were in 5g syringes it would be only slightly more expensive than the regular Kryonaut.

I recently took apart a 9 year old PC where I used Arctic Silver 5 for the CPU cooler. The paste was as good as new, not dry whatsoever. It was slightly displaced, though, which is bound to happen over time with vibrations and contraction/expansion.

Longevity is one of those underrated aspects that most reviews don't (and can't) measure. Because I bet most users don't take apart their PC once a year just to reapply the paste.

Nice mx4 2019 is pretty good last one was a little too wet though.

Only thermal grizzly I'd use is hydronaut it at least has never scratched anything
