"Indefinitely Postponed" RTX 3080 Ti Might See April Launch Carrying 12 GB GDDR6X Memory

A well-known leaker from NVIDIA cards past, Kopite7Kimi, has launched a rumor wherein the previously "indefinitely postponed" RTX 3080 Ti graphics card might see the light of day as early as April. Designed as an NVIDIA response to the price/performance offering from AMD's RX 6900 XT graphics card, the RTX 3080 Ti with an overkill 20 GB GDDR6X was rumored to have been in the works following the AMD launch. However, inventory difficulties related not only to wafer production from Samsung, but also GDDR6X supply from Micron and delays in the logistics channels meant that NVIDIA chose to shelve this graphics card release.

The new, reinterpreted RTX 3080 Ti graphics card is rumored to axe the 20 GB of GDDR6X memory in favor of a more tenable 12 GB - which some might argue is but a slight, but sufficient improvement from the RTX 3080's 10 GB. That memory amount, however, means that the card will have to carry a different, wider, 384-bit memory bus, which should mean improved memory performance, but also increased board costs. The RTX 3080 Ti is now rumored as carrying 80 enabled Streaming Multiprocessors (12 more than the RTX 3080's 68, and 2 less than the fully-enabled chip present in the RTX 3090.

No kidding. I was disappointed in my two Turing purchases but honestly they're starting to look like great deals in that:

1) They were something I could actually buy
2) I bought them at MSRP, not double the MSRP
3) The performance/$ is way better, thanks to ridiculous pricing on Ampere
4) The performance/W is comparable, thanks to ridiculous power draw on Ampere
5) They have as much or more RAM than the equivalent Ampere.
6) I've had them for over a year already.

Whenever I've seen a rumor from them, it turned out to be right. So yeah, they've earned that.
Plus, this latest edition of the 3080Ti seems consistent with the flagship MO of NVIDIA: just release a Titan class card for the high-end crowd, then release a x80 Ti a few months later for the enthusiast class.

Why not. If set part of memory on backside. On front 10*1GB and on back 6*1GB or 3*2GB. Double-sided channels and one-sided will be paired in bios and drivers.

Doing such a configuration will cause underutilization of the extra VRAM.
And not just the VRAM, this happens with regular RAM too. If your modules are mismatched in size, the extra size is slower.

If shitcoin prices keep slowly trending up there won't be any normality even early next year. If I understand all the news correctly there's simply no extra capacity at TSMC or anywhere else to help nvidia and amd ramp up the production beyond what they have already planned and clearly whatever they planned is not even nearly enough.

With Tesla today announcing they Will soon accept Bitcoin as payment and with eth and Bitcoin going up like crazy everyday (10% today again) I think autumn is very optimistic..

With bitcoin getting harder and harder to mine it's actually approaching a proper currency rather than just a means to make free money which is what it was back in the 290x mining craze and before.
Hopefully the prices of it will stabilize in the not too distant future.

It won't happen until the mining hash rate ROI decreases significantly. By the time that happens AMD/Nvidia will probably ready to launch new card and the new world order mining cycle continues.

First there was BTC, then LTC, then Doge, then Ethereum...
Now even the Indian government is planning to ban BTC trading and launch its own currency, LaxmiCoin.

Nvidia is obviously eager to put something between the "$700" 3080 and the "$1500" 3090, but I really don't see the point until the 3080 is actually available for that price... which it looks like it might never be at this point. Any 3080 Ti release is almost certainly going to be on the same silicon as the 3080 and 3090, so a new SKU here is just cannibilizing stock from an already unavailable product.

The kicker will be when a card for $300 is worth buying over the card that people bought 4 years ago for <$300. At the moment neither AMD nor Nvidia have even launched such a product.
