GALAX has now become the first NVIDIA partner from whom some details on how NVIDIA's push to limit the mining hash rates on their graphics cards will turn out. The new GALAX graphics cards in question are the already-released, unicorn-like RTX 3070 and RTX 3080. The GALAX packaging doesn't seem to have any differences compared to their original launch packaging for these graphics cards, though; however, the product pages for these respective products do have an additional [FG] compared to the original releases. This seems to be in-line with NVIDIA's decision not to differentiate between LHR and non-LHR cards at a packaging level, so as to reduce desirability for miners to just keep gobbling up remaining supply for the non-LHR graphics cards still in the channel.

As we already knew before, the LHR graphics cards feature an NVIDIA-designed solution that identifies the workload you're putting your card through and artificially halves its performance for Ethereum mining workloads. Of course, NVIDIA would prefer to have miners buying their mining-specific CMP (Crypto Mining Processor) cards and free up demand from their gaming-oriented RTX cards, effectively feeding two very distinct markets. It remains to be seen whether this new NVIDIA hashrate limitation survives more than a few days compared to their latest attempt at such a solution.

At least they're trying, after all, it's not like cryptocurrency mining is an environmentally conscious activity.

With Ethereum exiting PoW based work methods sometime this year likely though (possibly as early as July I've heard?)... I kind of question why they chose to target that coin of all coins.

Yes I know it's the most profitable right now. But it seems like wasted effort for short term gain,

What they are trying to do is maximize profits. Nothing being done here is out of concern for anything else.

They will be existing PoW next year, July isn't that.

July will just make it harder to mine.

So there is still some room to make money.

They are talking about switching since 2015, I believe it when it is released.

B2T: I wonder if miners will really adopt the CMP SKU this time, all previous tries flopped hard.

Of course nothing happens until it happens, but these are the most concrete plans for a switch to date from what I can see and remember about ethereum.

I mean they are going with the coin peoples are using their GPUs to mine the most , if they had went with another coin peoples would had trashed them . At the end of the day it's a battle you can't win there will always be some new hot coin for peoples to mine with those GPUs , at least Nvidia is giving a fight unlike AMD !

No, I get that... I guess my point is why JUST ethereum? Why not several?

And personally, because the battle is correctly lost before it begins, I am unsure this is really helpful at all. Fighting an unwinnable war for PR points isn't really all that productive.

Care to elaborate what is PoW and what will happen with eth?

Maybe you don't know that 6900xt do the half of what tuned 3090 can do in hash rate !
6900xt/6800xt/6800 is almost on bar with tuned 3060Ti .

That's good news for Gamers, those cards won't be so attractive to miners (unless nVidia mistakingly breaks the limit), and Gamers who mine in the side could sell their GPUs even high and get a new one for free plus some profit.

It's gonna get more difficult. PoW is proof of work which mining is. Proof of Stake is what ETH will eventually become thus can't be mined anymore.

Coming in July is EIP-1559 update and it will make the payments reduced greatly.

EIP 1559 is a proposal to reform the Ethereum fee market, with the following key changes: The current gas limit is replaced by two values: a “long-term average target” (equal to the current gas limit), and a “hard per-block cap” (twice the current gas limit)

Maybe they can try and add a display output to their cards, being "enthusiasts" they are quick to mod and remove limitations to maximize profits after all.

This is all just a publicity stunt. Miners will find a workaround just like they did with all the other Nvidia cards. Nvidia is trying to mend a damaged public image meanwhile selling truck loads of silicon directly to miners behind your back. They don't care about you, they never cared about you.

Surely either technical limitations or Nvidia not willing to invest resources into fighting irrelevant coins . I mean it's hard to tell without being an insider so yeah .

Personally i do believe that if Nvidia could push a button and remove the mining capabilities of their ''gaming'' lineup of GPUs they would had done so, not out of charity but because it would give them incredible marketing power and it would push mining customers towards their mining lineup of GPUs .

So the fact they haven't done it means there must be some limitation .

Maybe you don't know that 6900xt do the half of what tuned 3090 can do in hash rate !
6900xt/6800xt/6800 is almost on bar with tuned 3060Ti .

Sure i know that , still i don't see where you are going with this ? Does that mean that 6900XT/6800XT/6800 were less used for mining ? OFC NOT !

Miners would kill 3060Ti levels of hashrate and that's the reason why BigNavi has not been spared by miners and scalpers , if anything else according to Steam there are more Ampere GPUs going to gamers than Big Navi so yeah .... i really don't see where you are going with this !

Again at least Nvidia is doing something , unlike AMD .......

Yeah. Mining is hard to fingerprint vs general compute. Makes sense.

Does that mean that 6900XT/6800XT/6800 were less used for mining ? OFC NOT !
They are LESS used for mining but I'm not sure by a wide margin or anything.

I mean yes that's the point .

I have to disagree . I haven't seen any evidence indicating Big Navi is less used for mining than Ampere .

As i said in my previous comment if anything else we have yet to see a 6000 series SKU from AMD in the Steam Hardware survey list while there are several 3000 series SKU from Nvidia that have made it , this indicates that there are much more Ampere GPUs in the hands of gamers compared to BiG Navi .

Ofc Steam survey is not 100% representative but it's the best we have , so yeah .

The scalper pricing on them is a bit more favorable (or was last I looked) but other than that and hashrates I'll admit it's just a hunch.

I mean yeah obviously scalpers aren't pricing them as high as Ampere which is explained by the difference in hashrate but still , ROI on Big Navi might not be stellar but as long as its profitable miners are going for it . Fact that these cards are selling like hot cakes for double or triple their MSRP pretty much confirms that they are going to miner hands .

There's also a global silicon shortage affecting even automakers, so I'm not sure we can confirm anything. But it would not surprise me either.

I'm running a 6800XT - 64 MH/s @ 140w. That's as good as any of the 3000 series cards. Big navi cards are just as in demand for both mining and gaming as anything else. Scalping and stock prices reflect this situation.
