Samsung Electronics plans to build a new cutting-edge semiconductor fab in Austin, Texas, according to an ETimes report. An official announcement to this effect will be made later today, when South Korean President Moon and U.S. President Biden are scheduled to hold their first Summit meeting, in Washington DC. The facility will offer third-party contract manufacturing of semiconductor chips on the 5 nanometer EUV process. Samsung has earmarked an investment of $18 billion toward the construction of this fab, which will be located close to the company's existing foundry in Texas, which manufactures chips on the 14 nm node. Samsung's investment is in response to rising demand of high-volume logic chips by major American firms such as Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Tesla.

Good, it's about time these companies stopped putting all their eggs in one basket.

I hope they enjoy their rent prices, which are skyrocketing in Austin, TX.

possibly, but to be completely honest, the older I am getting the less gaming I do... and the less demanding games really amuse me more than the newer ones. I could foresee my 5600x and 6800 PC lasting me 10+ years honestly. so I simply may not be a customer anymore /shrug

also my backlog is so vast, a 6800 maxes out all of those games, and that backlog could easily last me 20 years.

so yeah I'm good to go. the only thing I really want now is a 4k monitor for games like FFX that are capped at 30 fps.

Yes, I agree, this will probably be my last upgrade too for about 10 years, I have a major backlog to get to and I personally am happy with where graphics are at their current state. Not to mention, these markets and the prices they are these days, have severely put me off that I don't have hope for the future products or that their prices will come at a fair price. There is always some other reason why the next generation is up 50%-100%, well, screw that, sick of it.

There are still indie games from like ten years ago I want to play, that I am genuinely excited to play still, but a book, or another game, or a tv series ends up distracting me, but it doesn't change the fact I still have a passion for these older games and I do intend to get to them someday. I actually have been doing an excellent job at not buying new games. I only bought 1 game this year and that was Pillars of Eternity II Obsidian Edition for $14, the entire collection for 14 was a solid deal imo. The idea of being on a wooden naval ship for a game like this really sounds fascinating, I might start that one up soon.

All my time right now is actually spent on the booktuber universe, I watch a few famous booktubers, and read books, and enjoying discussing those books with other people, etc. Someday when I need a break from that I will load up a game, and back and forth, etc. I never get burned out this way.

On-topic: it is nice to still see progress occurring though, even if I don't plan to participate. better than stagnation for the day I do upgrade in several years :)

Well if there is a power outage, it will probably be legit, and then they can hike prices................
