Eurocom Announces Sky Z7 R2 Laptop with Fully-Upgradeable Components

The EUROCOM Sky Z7 R2 has unmatched levels of upgradeability through the Mobile Supercomputer's modular slots, allowing the safe removal and replacement of important hardware components such as the laptop's CPU, GPU, Memory, Storage, LCD, and more. Having slots or sockets allows the Sky Z7 R2 to customized, upgraded and modified with compatible parts- giving this Eurocom Mobile Supercomputer the ability to run the most demanding applications and perform high level tasks for a very long time. Another "fully upgradeable" system. I always find this very misleading as there are generally a lot of limitations with laptop upgrades. I learned this the hard way. Right off the bat, the motherboard is not upgradeable, so its not appropriate to say that its "fully upgradeable". In addition, the Z590 chipset is going the way of the dodo since Alder Lake is using a new socket. So you can kiss goodbye to CPU upgrade too.

Yeah, I saw the article. And I think its something waiting to happen. I don't believe in "fully upgradeable" laptop even if they are using desktop CPUs and MXM based GPUs. The motherboard chipset aside which we know will not be used with newer Intel processors, even the display connectivity and power requirement may result in a mandatory change of laptop if you want to get the latest and greatest CPU and GPU. I was denied a GPU upgrade from a boutique laptop maker in the past even though they market an upgradeable GPU, because of the reasons mentioned above.

"Upgradeable" needs to be taken with a heavy dose of scepticism too. If you can even find a compatible MXM module of the right variant with the existing cooling system/display connectivity etc, you will likely struggle with availability as they're not things typically sold in the consumer retail channels. Pricing is usually outrageous too, and just because it's technically upgradeable doesn't mean it's economically viable to upgrade just the MXM instead of upgrading to a whole new laptop.

Also, not that Eurocom are the sole offenders but I despise 4K displays in laptops. They're power hogs that cripple brightness levels and battery life compared to their 2560x1440 alternatives. It's not like you can realistically use them at 4K without scaling either and you need to be 30cm from the screen to resolve individual pixels, which is just stupid. Apple got displays "right" a long time ago by defining their Retina displays as "a display so sharp that pixels are not visible to the naked eye at viewing distance". Anything beyond that is just wasteful, and laptops cannot afford to be wasteful with either their battery or GPU.

IMO 1440p is beyond "Retina" for 17" laptops unless you are too close to the screen for it to be a sensible viewing distance. So Eurocom are offering 1080p which is below 'Retina', 4K which is far above 'Retina' and completely ignoring the sweet spot that many other manufacturers have sensibly picked. Your two screen options both suck, so what's the point in having options?
