It's a personal judgment. I find it interesting. Pretty much every new mouse is just black plastic clone of each other and this is gray, has some speckles and cyan accents. That's pretty cool. I'm still waiting for white SS mouse comeback, those looked super nice.
Fair enough. More power to you.

I think that even if they managed to reduce emissions by even 5-15% it's already very good. Sure MS won't save a planet and it sure does help them sell those mouses, but if they contribute even a small bit, that's appreciated.

It's 2021 and it's crazy that people are still unaware of rechargeable batteries, which existed for a very long time.

I agree -- i love the way this looks... and the fact it's a bit novel since it's an actual product made from recycling and it actually looks unique.

Anything to make recycling more commercially viable is a partial win in my book. We take those, even at 80% gimmick levels.

I don't know if that's 80% gimmick. It's not only materials, but also manufacturing that pollutes. Net gimmickry is likely 90% or even more.

Is it recycling if someone tosses it back into the ocean?
When can I make a better mouse out of recycled ocean mice?

FYI, products claimed to be made out recycled ocean plastic are 98% ±1% lies. The quantities of recycled ocean produced are just abysmal due to it being extremely time consuming to process the stuff, and the end product is actually black. (So, yeah I lol'd hard @ that white mouse) So they get whatever little bit they can manage to source and mix that into plastic that they can get in actual quantity and then claim 'made using recycled ocean plastic'.

Duly noted. I had a feeling this was the case. Appreciate the heads up. Reminds me of how NonProfits / 501c3s can raise millions, but only have to actually spend like 10% or less on the actual cause they're raising money for. The other 90% can be spent on "administration costs".

i use a lot of plastic in my work, if the brand has 20% recycled material , that is usually the max recycled materials it can withhold and still be usable.
the integrity of the material is important, as you dont want to create a product that has a short lifespan.

Using any kind of recycled plastic over virgin fossil-based plastic is good. Sourcing that recycled material from vulnerable places is good. Using bio-based plastic would also be good. But ... not to be too on the nose, but 20% in a single mouse - and one that is LOUDLY advertised as such - is a drop in the ocean. If they implemented this across all plastics in all their product lines? That would be something. If they didn't take every opportunity to brag about it, and instead just did it? That would show some integrity. This? While the motivations of the people behind the initiative are no doubt good, the end result is still greenwashing. Even an initiative to maintain and refurbish more would have much more of an effect than this - but of course that wouldn't have the potential to drive sales. Which just brings us back to the simple truth: There is no ethical consumption under capitalism.

Yep.

Recycling plastic in general is iffy endeavor and most of it ends up in the landfill anyways (proverbially at least, in either case I'd rather "landfill" not extend to water bodies).

Well, you could theoretically get any color you wanted, either by exclusively using harvested clear plastics and dying them, or by being extremely careful in your sorting process. Of course that drives up prices on what is already very, very expensive - but it is theoretically possible. Nobody is doing this, of course, as they're all businesses looking to make a profit.

This. As much as it may sound like tin-hat rambling, there is truth to this. The level of actual ocean-sourced recycled plastic is very low. This is yet another deception and marketing scheme to make money from the "green" crowd. It should not be taken seriously..

So he has legit criticisms of two things and that makes him a "debbie downer?"

Wow.

Yes, we should instead blindly accept PR spin as gospel. You know, don't be that downer who actually approaches the world with some semblance of curiosity and critical thinking. That's such a drag!
