Philips Launches 329M1RV and 279M1RV 120Hz Monitors for Xbox Series X|S

The gaming scene changed dramatically last year with the implementation of HDMI 2.1, a new enhancement in connectivity supporting a range of higher video resolutions and refresh rates including 4K @ 120 Hz, a new level for console gamers. Pointless, you can get a bigger and way better OLED for a similar price, monitor manufacturers should get their act together and sell their monitors for a reasonable price 500-600$ is a reasonable range.

I agree that 2160p120+ monitors are too expensive, but TV comparisons (and especially OLED TV comparisons) are rather stupid. TVs outsell gaming monitors by 10-100x easily, and thus have massive scale advantages in bringing down costs, especially amortization of R&D costs. Also, TVs (yes, even the 48" ones) are too big to use on a desk unless you are one of the lucky (very) few for which this wouldn't be a major ergonomic problem. Of course, current OLED TVs also have an RGBW subpixel array which leads to issues for text rendering and the like. Hardly ideal. They are fantastic for what they do, and outshine monitors in many, many ways, but a 1:1 comparison is just wrong. Plus, you can easily argue for how monitors are poor value without invoking the "just put a huge TV on your desk" line of thinking.

IMO, these look rather underwhelming. Philips generally doesn't compete in the high end of monitors, and things like the "HDR"400 rating for the 32" panel here underscores this. The featureset looks decent - USB hub, USB-C input (hopefully that means KVM functionality), ambilight?, clean designs, integrated PSUs; there are some good things here. A single DP is a bit meh while 3x HDMI feels a bit overkill, but I guess it's fine - the USB-C should do DP as well, at least, and if you're one of those weirdos who insists on HDMI on your PC and have two consoles, you can do that here. But we know nothing about panel performance and overdrive tuning, and regardless of this they really need to come down in price.

At least it's good that these are finally showing up - the 329m1r was first rumored back in august of 2019, more than two years ago. It was reportedly delayed to add HDMI 2.1, but still - that took a while!

As someone who got a 278M1R for £330 in March, these look...sanely priced for what they are? I like the design and it seems unchanged from my model.
