Sony Confirms DualShock 3 PS3 Controller

During its press conference at the 2007 Tokyo Game Show, Sony Computer Entertainment announced that it will replace the Sixaxis PlayStation 3 controller with the DualShock 3 Wireless Controller, a new controller for PLAYSTATION 3 (PS3) incorporating a rumble feature. The controller will debut in Japan this November as a separately sold accessory, with a Spring 2008 target for US and European market. Some of the games listed as compatible with the rumble feature are BIOHAZARD 5, Devil May Cry 4, Metal Gear Solid 4, Metal Gear Solid Online, and Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Other PS3 titles that are already in the market may become compatible with the rumble feature through software update.

well maybe it was a problem at the time of the PS3's release - you surely cant critasize a company for OVERCOMING that restraint & releasing a product which wouldnt of been possible to be released at a certain point in time.

but yeh, I agree that these past few years Sony has really gone downhill.

I blaime their adminitration/management - Sony have released too many products that even they themselves cant keep track of - let alone the quality of the products which come out of their prodution lines. you cant garantee that their stuff wont break within 2 weeks of u buying the product,

too many products require LOTS of rats to run their SUPPORT lines & I guess thats not one of their strong points.

How do you know there were no technical constraints?! For all we know there were which the R&D team have managed to overcome.

Exactly. The currrent controller has the same space and layout as the previous so no reason the dual-shock motors wont fit.
I think alot of it has to do with the MS FFB product line that was in fact stolen from Immersion(why you will no longer find ANY info on ANY MS site regarding their FFB products, they basically swept it under the rug than admit to actually stealing it)
MS actually licensed it out to Saitek(again without permission from Immersion)so they too got burned. After that Immersion locked up their tech tight. You want FFB you gotta pay Immersion they are THEE FFB folks.

I can see the point jock is making, and I wouldn't be suprised in the least if it were a money/patent issue. You have also remember they said nobody wanted it anymore, or no one cared about it (in not so many words). Then there was the huge customer backlash in reaction to that statement, proving Sony either knew how we loved it and were trying to pull the wool over our eyes to save them $$$, or they weren't at all in touch with their customer base.

BUT!!! I can also see how it might have been an R&D issue. Think about the mico-sensors in the controller that sense pitch/roll/yaw making the SIX-AXIS what it is.... now picture those tiny sensors being violently vibrated.... I'm no engineer, but IMO that could present a problem.

It will be interesting to see if any of the games that use motion sensing will allow rumble.

Actually I believe the technology restraints were that they could use the mothod that Immersion owns. They overcame this by developing a different method. There were stories about this going around in the past.

So then will this controller still have the six-axis gyro-type tilt controller technology in them, as well as the vibrate?
That'd actually be really kewl, say for instance in a driving game where you run over some bumps while tilting the controller. The vibrations make your driving less accurate, which is exactly the way it is with the steering wheel.

I agree that it was probably a challenge though, with high frequency vibration and an accelerometer close to each other!? That's just askin for calibration problems all over the place.

hey, lets all rejoice that they got it back. Sure, we dont get it till next year, but we are getting it. They should start bundling it soon as well. Hopefully, it wont be 50bucks for the thing and they will offer it for like 30 bucks like the old ps2 controllers.
