Although Intel has already announced that it won't be making any decision with regards to its investments in Europe this year, new rumours courtesy of Reuters are now suggesting that Intel is eyeing Italy for an investment of €4 to €8 billion for a new, advanced semiconductor chip packaging plant. This largely leaves Germany and France as the options for Intel's so called "megafab" that the company is planning to build in Europe over the next few years.

Intel has already said it would invest around US$7 billion for a similar chip packaging plan in Penang, Malaysia, a location where Intel already has a chip packaging facility. When contacted by Reuters, Intel said "We are encouraged by the many possibilities to support the EU's digital agenda and 2030 semiconductor ambitions. While current negotiations are ongoing and confidential, we plan to make an announcement as soon as possible." The Italian government is also said to have some concerns with regards to how many jobs the plant will actually create, as well as what the energy costs will be, which could throw a spanner in the works if Intel doesn't provide the right answers.

You're very welcome but, when you realise this is the place with the highest business energy prices and with one of the highest labour taxation burden in the entire EU, i think you're gonna change your mind.

Do you know how expensive land is there? It's a tiny country, much of it is below sea level and on "reclaimed" land...
I mean, a large chunk of their population has moved to the Nordics or elsewhere, simply because there's more space there.

I lived in netherlands for a decade the only reason most people move out was for taxation purposes, in fact most moved to Antwerp/ Belgium. The other reason and possibly for many in northern climate is the sun. That is why most brits and etc move to spain, italy etc for retirement. As grey clouds takes a toll on you.

Can't be the reason why so many Dutch have moved to the Nordics, as the tax is not going to be any better there. My understanding is that they wall wanted more space, as in a garden around their house. Then again, the Germans have bought out a large chunk of the summer houses in the Nordics, since they want to get away during the summer holidays.
Can't say I'm a huge fan of Amsterdam, but I've only been there in winter and it's miserable. Last time I left Sweden at -17 and got to Amsterdam at around zero and I was so much colder there. Then again, the Netherlands any day over Belgium...

Usually they negotiate some tax relief before they go and invest, i doubt they will pay the same tax as regular businesses.
Hopefully Italy has some smart people running the country and get this done or some other country gets the deal.

What company would set up operations in a country whose gov't changes hands every 18 months? This has to be a ploy to elicit better deals elsewhere.

Not only grey clouds, but below 0 weather for over 6 months of the year lol Why a lot of Canadians that can afford it will spend the winters in Florida, Arizona, Mexico, etc. We call them snow birds. And those who can't have to endure the long cold dark of winter.

So, when they say packaging plant, do they mean putting a finished product in a box or putting the die on the small pcb or both or other???

Lots of land here. Come and visit, or get a place for the summer. You can have a swarm of black flies and mosquitoes around the swamp garden around the house ;) You can tent out in my backyard, my lot is 99ftx132ft :)

All kidding aside, it is nice to have some green space around the home.

-17C, it's so nice when the daytime high hits that ;) I think it was -27C last night, about normal for this time of the year though at 48.47N

It's where the dies are tested and packaged into a chip. Very complex process for some chips that use through vias or are stacked by some other means.
