Samsung Goes Large with 55-inch Odyssey Ark Monitor

There's always a discussion about screen sizes and resolution when news about a new display is posted and we have a feeling that this one will be ultra polarising, since Samsung has decided to show off a 55-inch 4K curved display, with a tilt option. Yes, you read that correctly and there are pictures from CES to prove it as well. It would appear to come with a small, external control unit, which is likely to come handy, as reaching the onboard controls could be tricky on a large display like this.

Little else is known about the Odyssey Ark at this moment, but it's apparently using what Samsung calls a Quantum Mini-LED panel and it's meant to have multiple built in speakers. However, it is said to be a real product that should launch in the US market in the second half of this year, but expect to pay a crazy premium for the pleasure of owning one.

OK I understand the marketing need from companies promoting the "bigger is better" sales pitch. But there has to be a limit. Can you imagine the neck and eye strain that guy on the photo must have after being in front of that monitor for a few minutes? and to sit a reasonable distance away it kind of defeats the purpose of the monitor (you have a TV for that). Not sure who would buy that - perhaps a video/game production company, some wall street firm wiht money to spare.

Samsung displays are great....but why don't you make them flat ?

The only thing stopping me buying one of those Odyssey bla bla bla, is the 1000R curve

And the new 34 inch curve QD-OLED as well... just MAKE THEM FLAT 27 and 32 inch.

IMO too big for desktop unless you're trying to replace a 2x2 array of monitors.

Also, I'm not convinced that a variable radius works for curved displays. We're all used to the distortion caused by a flat image, you can re-adjust to a curved image very quickly, having parts of the image with flat distortion and the rest of it less distorted because of the curve makes no sense to me. Why not just make the whole thing a consistent 1500R rather than having a weird curvature change along the horizontal axis?

This is a hard-core pass, Samsung. WAY too much curve! You want to get the curve just right? From center point, each edge of the display should be NO MORE than a 5 degree arc. What you have shown above is an epic failure. Laughably so!
