My opinion, i didn't like GTA 4 (boring main character, boring storylines, good open world exploring). GTA 5 (Worse main characters ever, boring stupid storylines, again good open world exploring).
Unless GTA 6 is GTA 3 part 2 with claude or vice city part 2 with tommy, think i will pass.

And the hype train is on the move. I am not sure how this will turn out, but so far most highly anticipated games have fallen flat during launch.

Can we have a lukewarm option, something that's a 6/10 and not 4 at best. Or were you afraid it would take >70% of votes?

Whatever they release at this point is guaranteed to fall short of expectations. I know most of you around here won't care as much, but there are people out there that are so hyped that they'll be outraged because they won't be able to customise the color of their farts in the game or that a random NPC's nose hair isn't dense enough, so naturally they will go and cry "literally unplayable" in the reviews. After such a long delay between games it's a bit of a Half-Life 3 effect.

On the other hand, they have the fresh examples of how Cyberpunk 2077 did on launch, or even worse - their own botched Definitive remasters, so at least from a technical point of view the game should be solid. Or rather, it must be. But the longer you delay to polish stuff, the worse the above problem gets.

There are some other points to consider, too, such as the abandonment of V's single-player campaign, the massive microtransactions push in Online, the multiple the DMCA takedowns of mods and Take-Two's Zynga buyout. After all these I won't be surprised if they start dabbling in the NFT plague soon and/or incorporate them in the game. This would be a ritual suicide in my book.

The GTA games are my favorites but I don't know if Rockstar will earn my money this time. Only time will tell...

Well they did a good job with RDR2. Here's hoping...
With as much respect as I have for that game for... SO many things in it, I do hope they've been working on their mechanics. Especially when it comes to quests/jobs, but really when it comes down to a lot of little mechanics that they insist on sticking with doing in what look to me like arbitrarily consistent ways in spite of mostly just inconveniencing the player unnecessarily. RDR2 I think is the last game I can really put up with certain running design kinks that they just seem to have because they never thought or cared to update them, and it does make their games feel sloggy in the wrong moments. Just too much "Tch... ahhhhh... well, okay." It's death by 1000 needles for me.

But that's a problem I've always had with them. Their games ARE top polish. But I fear the stagnation has long set in as a consequence. They already feel formulaic to me, and I tire increasingly more of how they get certain things done in their games with each release. They become that much closer to being dealbreakers each time. The Rockstar way of building games is getting old for me.

The difference is, Rockstar has a "Blizzard-like" approach to things, meaning the game is done when it's done. This is a huge difference and means they can delay it further and further if the game isn't perfect, just release it when they feel like it and not launch a buggy game because of the winter market or to meet a launch date.

In the end , this makes me pretty confident that the game will not suck, aside from the fact that this is Rockstar and not some random company, their track record simply is great.

I think you misunderstood me. Let me try again: I have little reason to think the game won't be technically sound. What worries me is T2/R*'s recent business direction.

Ah yes a lot of people are worried about that however I'm not. Never invested a dime in GTA Online, used and got all content for free and enjoyed it. I don't know about RDR2 though but I can't imagine it to be bad.

Very possibly so, they have to reinvent themselves if they want GTA VI to be another great installment. They did it with V, I think everyone was surprised by the 3 character approach of the story mode, compared to the standard 1 char approach they always had before.

I have a copy for Xbox360, this is the version that came over 1 year ahead of the PC version. Played through the game again on PC. The game ran surprisingly well on the old console.

I still can't believe that GTA V is my most played (single player) Steam game by hours at 173, so I must have enjoyed it. I just hope they don't cave too much and keep the next GTA as irreverent as the previous games.

Will be released for PS5 and for PS6 (lunch together most likely) in ~ 2026/2027, and 2-3 years later ported to PC.
I'll be too old to even care at that time.

I bet on Q4 2023 and PC version after 1 year, maybe a bit more, just like with GTA V.

I mean the title says "well underway", so I don't think it will be more than 2 years, Q4 2023 isn't exactly around the corner. Even mid 2023 is possible. Later than 2024 is very unlikely as well.

It's guessing. Look at the CP77 timeline (for a big complex AAA open world comparison), when it was first announced, all the delays, dates changing. I take this only as a "were are working on it", when will it be finished, no one knows. Unless of course they just set a date and release whatever crap is done.

I'm betting for a Q4 2023 simultaneous release on last & current gen consoles (although since the goal is to significantly move beyond what previously delivered doesn't bode well for last gen but then again 180 million consoles is something that can't be easily ignored) and 1 year later for PC with Nvidia sponsored features support for "Ada Lovelace next" GPU launch (I bet monolithic also on 3nm TSMC, so 2026 for MCM design on 3nm+ TSMC or 2nm Samsung) and maybe simultaneously or one year later for a PS5 Pro (Q4 2024 launch?)

It's guessing. Look at the CP77 timeline (for a big complex AAA open world comparison), when it was first announced, all the delays, dates changing. I take this only as a "were are working on it", when will it be finished, no one knows. Unless of course they just set a date and release whatever crap is done.
My interpretation is that they have already worked on it a lot, the actual meaning of the words "well underway", Rockstar is not comparable to CP77 company (name forgotten), Rockstar has no pressure to meet deadlines, so they don't have to make up things if the game is very far away from being finished. This is politics then, and Rockstar is in the unique position to not need politics, comparable to Blizzards approach. Also, they know that GTA V is very old now and has to be replaced, this is not at all comparable to CP77 because CP77 isn't a continuing franchise including online mode like GTA is. This puts additional pressure on them to finish it faster. I also think they have more resources.

There is always pressure. If Take2 wants a good quarter earnings there's not much they can do. Prior to this CDPR was bigger in market cap then all of Ubisoft and one of the most loved companies that could do no bad. Earnings, stock price, bosses bonus, it's all the same as long as they are public companies.

Take2 is now taking the same route like Valve and Epic Games, as in, milking game franchises to earn money, no need to be pressured to develop new games. GTA Online for example is still very successful. The only pressure is, to keep it this way. GTA V is now getting too old and VI has to be finished in the soon future, not 4 years or other hilarious numbers.
