AMD Receives All Regulatory Approvals to Acquire Xilinx

AMD (NASDAQ: AMD) today announced that it has received approval from all necessary authorities to proceed with the acquisition of Xilinx, Inc. (NASDAQ: XLNX). With the exception of the remaining customary closing conditions, all conditions to the transaction closing have been satisfied and the company expects the transaction to close on or about February 14, 2022.

AMD announced its intention to acquire Xilinx in an all-stock transaction on October 27, 2020. The transaction brings together two industry leaders with complementary product portfolios and customers, combining CPUs, GPUs, FPGAs, Adaptive SoCs and deep software expertise to enable leadership computing platforms for cloud, edge and intelligent end devices.

The company logos look like they were made by the same designer in the same state of mind, it won't be hard to combine them into one.

That would just take more die space for the same thing though. What good would reprogramability of the chip section do there?

Download the microcode for each old instruction, every time, from xilinx.amd.com, so developers learn not to use them?

I think AMD need xilinx cause in the Desktop Market they have below 200€ zero, nothing against any CPU since Comet Lake.

Apple has control of the entire stack though. AMD has to run on software not specifically designed for their hardware.

Xilinx's acquisition has nothing to do with budget cpus. It's about the Data Center (SmartNICs, computational storage, silicon photonics), autonomous driving, telecommunications (5G).

You'll lose more going FPGA than you ever could gain back with another ISA.

Depends on the task, these'd do well in servers & "eventually" general consumer market if AMD can build a good software base for them. There's no free lunch & as Nvidia, with CUDA, or Apple have demonstrated software goes a long way into making the best use of your (own) hardware.

It's the IP for deformable co processor's, that could get interesting pretty quickly.
Intel has they're FPGA subsidiary too.
