With motherboard vendors posting UEFI firmware updates to support it, we were wondering where the actually processor is. It turns out, that the new AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D started shipping from factories. Greymon55, a reliable source with hardware leaks, states that 5800X3D is shipped, and the first retail batch of these processors could reach markets by the end of the month (the end of March, 2022).

The 5800X3D is the first client processor to feature a 3D stacked-die design. AMD is introducing the new 3D Vertical Cache, a 64 MB addition to the processor's 32 MB on-die cache, which works contiguously as a 96 MB L3 cache that each of the processor's eight "Zen 3" cores can access. Apparently "Zen 3" with 3D Vertical Cache has major performance gains, with AMD claiming gaming performance parity with the Core i9-12900K.

I'm interested to see pricing, I want to upgrade my 2700x, and my X470 board, but I'm thinking it might be cheaper if I wait until Zen4 is released and buy a Zen3 chip, maybe I'll pick up a 5800x or 5800x3D then and an x570s board, not looking forward to dropping all that money though, probably will be able to get away with the 5700xt until RX7000 is released and see if I can finally get an RX6800

@W1zzard
Is TPU doing a review of this CPU? It stands to reason, but the question is still worth asking just in case AMD didn't send a review sample..

Why would you bother getting a x570s board and a 5800xd when zen 4 comes out? I thought the whole point of buying AMD was you didnt need a new motherboard for every CPU?

If you're going to switch out the whole platform may as well go zen 4. If you want a 5000 series, just put it in your x470 board and dont waste the money on a 570 board.

What I want to see is a 5950X3D with IGPU.
Huh? Whay would you want a iGPu on a 5950x? that would be a waste of space, not to mention much mroe expensive.

a 5950x3d I could see, but why the iGPU?

Fair enough. This new development looks very interesting and seems like good progress. Looking forward to your usual in-depth dive!

You should skip 2k and go to 4k. 1440p is nice but the scaling for some games and emulators is a real PITN. 720p scales perfectly to 1080p and 1080p scales perfectly to 2160p. Nothing scales to 1440p very well and ends up looking like crap at times. I'm trying to decide on a pair of 4k displays for my main rig. Not easy. Been dragging my feet on a platform upgrade as well. I'm look favorably at the 12700k, but if there is a specific benefit to the massive amount of 3D cache these CPU's will have, that will likely swing my choice.

Still idly hoping for a 5950X3D variant, just to end my AM4 journey on while watching DDR5 mature.

Sadly there are still games that depend the most on the raw single core performance.
5800x -> max boost 4.7 Ghz
5800x3d -> max boost 4.5 Ghz
That's based on AMD specs. We'll see how it translates to 1-4 core workloads.

There specs are conservative.

The 5800X at stock with no PBO does 4.85 Ghz With PBO 5.05Ghz is doable single core.

So we should see something similar on the newer chip.

Single core performance is almost directly related to cache hits, frequency and branching predictions, branching is about even between the two players, it’s down to frequency and cache size. What AMD can’t squeeze out of the process node is more frequency, so more cache it is.

I would be happy with a 5900X3D.

I was not so concerned about games. All of the games I play will run fine on the 5600X so the 5800X3D will be fine for them. However, I do more than gaming and I want lots of fast cores/threads and 64MB of cache, I suspect, will give a serious boost to what I do. A 5900X3D would meet my needs and while a 5950X3D would be nice, I don't need that much performance.

You do realize that it's his choice not one AMD made for him. Nor did they say it would be his choice for x years and a year after release make the choice for him despite that.

2650x1440 is exactly twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of 1280x720, the same way that 3840x2160 is twice the horizontal and vertical resolution of 1920x1080.

Opps, yup, you're right. Still my point was the scaling. For complicated reasons 720p scales up to 1080p well but 1080p doesn't scale well to 1440p. But I digress, we're getting off topic...
