MSI Launches the MAG Trident S 5M Desktop PC

MSI released a new gaming desktop, the MAG Trident S 5M, a machine dedicated to cloud gaming and mobile gaming. It is different from traditional gaming desktops and focuses more on helping gamers enjoy games in the living room. Gamers only need to activate the Android system emulator (MSI APP Player) and the 30-day free XBOX GAME PASS ULTIMATE through the Game Stadium software exclusively developed by MSI to control mobile games on the sofa with only one joystick. You can easily access cloud games and other entertainment software.

The exclusive MSI APP Player allows players to emulate the Android system in the Windows system. Gamers can experience mobile games on a larger screen with better performance. They can also use the Multi-Instance Manager function to open different games in different windows. Certain games can also enable joystick mode, allowing players to use the same joystick to play. In STEAM, you can play games through the built-in Big Screen Mode. In Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, there is the same operation mode to let you use the joystick directly so that it can be perfectly applied to various game software.



Small Desktop with Excellent Performance
Filled with minimalist design elements, the MAG Trident S 5M is equipped with an 8-core/16-thread AMD Ryzen 5700G APU in its 2.6-liter body and supports FidelityFX Super Resolution technology, which can effectively increase the number of game frames by 2.4 times. The motherboard is also equipped with 2 sets of SSD PCIe Gen 3 slots and a 2.5" hard drive slot, allowing players to store more games and files. Components can be upgraded through the specially designed motherboard quick slot. Just remove a screw and the entire set of the motherboard can be upgraded.

Equipped with Multiple Features Loved by Gamers
Network experience is crucial to the product positioning of MAG Trident S 5M. To optimize the network experience, MSI introduced LAN Manager software to enhance the network performance for mobile games, cloud games, and PC games, so that they can all run smoothly. In terms of connection ports, it provides 3 video outputs (HDMI 2.0, DP 1.4, and VGA output) to help gamers enjoy different entertainment content at the same time. There is a USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type C in the front that provides 15 W output, allowing players to shorten the time it takes to charge external devices. On the side of the MAG Trident S 5M is a physical shortcut G Key, which can be used to set up a shortcut for frequently used software.

Given that this is APU-based, it's clearly not meant to compete with a full powered console. It can probably emulate Switch games well though! Still, kind of interesting product, aiming at ... playing mobile games from the couch (yeah, that's a non-starter), and Xcloud etc. Those APUs can also handle low-end gaming decently as long as you're willing to compromise on resolution. But it's probably best for Steam Remote Play with a gaming PC in another room or Xcloud if you've already got Game Pass Ultimate.

After the supposed success of the Steam deck, we are starting to see a barrage of console wannabe coming up from the big brands. Soon the market will be over saturated. For me, I think the Xbox Series S will likely be a better buy than this. Not only is it cheaper as compared to this, but also more powerful when it comes to GPU. Sure it won’t be able to play games on Steam, but for a Ryzen 7 5700G, I don’t think the APU is that capable of playing every single game in there.

I was thinking it might be a "just the box, not the feet and protrusions" type of measurement, but even that doesn't seem to make sense here. Maybe someone meant to write "5.6l" on a post-it somewhere but for some reason wrote the 5 upside-down?

This is very clearly not meant to compete against the Series S - they're clearly marketing this as a multi-purpose game streaming device, not a console. And the XSS is many times more powerful than this. Is it a better buy? Guess that depends whether you want to stream Steam, EGS and other games or are happy with Xcloud+Game Pass+buying Xbox games. I would tend to agree with you, but then I don't think I'm the target market for this anyhow.

Also, given that PC product development cycles are easily 2 years from concept to hardware, this is definitely not a response to the Steam Deck. More likely it's a response to Xcloud, Stadia and similar services (though Stadia is on life support and being pivoted to other uses).

Still, the hardware would definitely have been more exciting if this came with a soldered 6800H or similar - though on the other hand it would be pretty cool if this supports standard ITX motherboards. That cooler looks like it would make that impossible though.

I assume because of the name being similar to their Trident Z line of RAM? MSI has been making Trident-branded SFF desktop for years in both the Trident A, AS, X and [number] series, so I doubt it's a problem. They probably understood the highly complex idea that people are unlikely to confuse RAM sticks with a PC - which is honestly a cut above most corporate logic
