New 40GB PS3 on the Cards

Sony doesn't really seem to be able to make up its mind about what it wants to do with the PS3 at the moment, but as things stand it's looking likely that the $599 80GB version of the console will soon be the only model left on the shelves as the 60GB model slowly fades away. However, FCC documents suggest that a $399 40GB version of the PS3 could be on the way, which is reported to feature Bluetooth, WiFi, at least two USB ports, a HDMI port and an Ethernet port, as well as the rest of the usual hardware. Given that just about every other spec is identical to the current PS3, a 40GB model is seen as being the most likely new addition. It's worth noting that it is also possible that Sony may even choose to make a more expensive PS3 with a bigger hard drive, although this is doubtful given that the current 80GB model is struggling to compete with the Xbox 360 Premium and its $399 price tag. Either way, if you want to guarantee your PS2 games will work you'd better get your hands on one of the 60GB PS3s soon, as that is the only model left using the PS2's Emotion Engine rather than software emulation when playing old titles and it won't be around for much longer.

a $399 price tag would pretty much make this device the same cost as the cheapest Hd-DVD players and as long as Sony doesn't remove any additional hardware or connectivity ports id have to say at $399 a PS£ is a reasonably priced console/multimedia device, no doubt Europe wont be enjoying any such price point for a long while yet.

Well if the hardware stays the same the 40 GB PS3 would be a very good move by Sony. They're selling it for $399, $200 cheaper than the 80 GB, (for 40 GB of extra space, extra $200 is definitely not worth it). Also, you can always upgrade the hard drive yourself. They would definitely see a boost in sales...

But I do have a feeling that the 40 GB version would be somewhat hardware handicapped compared to the 80 GB version.

Damn SONY. Even the 40GB version of the PS3 will not run PS2 games. That's BS. What about the "promise" it used to say about the backward compatible?!! Backward compatible still plays as one of the important roles in the console. Look at the Wii, you can purchase classic childhood NES, Super NES, etc. and they can be played with the Wii. I was going to get the PS3 this X-mas. Now forget it. I'm going to for the Wii.

You can still play PS2 and PS1 games, but through Emulation, not through the emotion engine.

Even still, there is a benefit to playing ps1/2 on ps3 if you have an HDTV. PS3 upscales them to HD. PS2 games played on the PS2 looks like ass on my Samsung 32" LCD, but PS2 games look great when played thru my PS3.

Agreed Wil E. I wasnt aware they cancelled the emotion engine processor in the 80GB Models of the PS3. Surely, an update would fix the compatibility problems of some of the PS2 games that dont work.

Also, I agree with whoever said to quite whining about the PS2 compatibility problems and not needing a ps3 to play them.

My PS2 games look pretty decent on my 32" and my 50"...are you using Component Cables for the PS2?

Yea I'm also using Component connection for my PS2. The graphic looks much better than regular AV (yellow).

Yes. Still looks poo on my 32" Samsung. The difference between playing on PS2 and PS3 is stunning.
