Microsoft Extends Sales Availability of Windows XP

In an effort to respond to feedback the company is hearing from its customers and partners, Microsoft is extending availability of Windows XP editions among original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and retail channels for an additional five months to June 30, 2008 instead of the previously planned date of Jan. 30, 2008. In addition, the company will continue to offer Windows XP Starter Edition in emerging markets where it is currently available for the rapidly growing class of hardware-constrained ultra-low cost PCs until June 30, 2010. i think MS has realised people are willing to change if they cant get what they want, vista has no doubt driven people to at least try using linux.

Maybe MS should charge for major updates so they're not compelled to release a new OS when they're not ready to. Isn't that what Apple has done with OS X and it's major updates?

While I like some of the improvements in Vista, so many things have been changed for no other reason than to be different than XP. Looks like enough people saw through the cosmetic changes

spot on, my old man has vista on this rig but im using the XP media centre OS, he hates Vista!! i gave him a copy of ubuntu (or however its spelt) and he now regrets getting vista.

I don't see no point getting rid off Windows XP. Before they used to support 95, 98, 98SE, ME, 2000, XP, all together. Now they stop supporting the older versions than XP. Don't tell me they can't even handle these two kids (Vista & XP) together!

For a HTPC, Vista is FAR superior to XP Media Center since Vista actually comes with codecs and actual support as well. I just put Vista on my main rig and haven`t looked back. Works great for me and was simple to install. I do believe that there is no reason to stop selling XP, but there is really nothing wrong with Vista as long as you are using midrange or higher spec gear.

To a degree, but each major update has brought significant feature upgrades as well. While still loosely based on the same core, each point release is like a new OS.

I dont ever remember any other Windows OS revision getting such flack before. Ive been around them since the DOS then Windows 3.1 days though....

I have Vista, but Ive yet to try it out on my computer, fear that some of my stuff wont work as well in the current state...

Oh definitely, I'd be expecting more out of a service pack if I had to pay for it.

I'd be happy getting core improvements and features while skipping all the "change for the sake of change" that you get with Vista.

Superfetch, DX10, etc. I don't see any reason why that couldn't have been incorporated into XP... but I'm just a fan yelling at the coach from the bleachers after the game
