APU will overheat, if you don't properly cool it. It wouldn't suddenly behave differently and renders your cooling insufficient.

Well, the advantage of having an APU in the car is that it is directly exposed to the outside temperature. Imagine you live somewhere in the north and it is minus 20°C, How would that APU overheat? Only if it is placed by a stupid engineer somewhere very close to a serious heat source!

Well Teslas are stupid cars so shrug. Plastic bumper bits, unreliable bits on older models down to the door handles, and how can you ignore the YOKE on a sedan like shown on the front page of this news post? Moronic cars really. They had batteries overheat on older models as well. It's good that we now have actual competition in the EV market, especially with the Hyundai and the alike brands you wouldn't have expected back in 2012. Ioniq 5 looks nice.

Well, I learnt my lesson - never ever again a car from outside of Europe. Only European brands!

European cars get the rear end of reliability far often than Asian vehicles... this has been a case with BMW, Volkswagon and other brands of that form during the past decade.

There are cars without infotainment in certain markets like outside the U.S, but those vehicles are so crap in other means, they probably wouldn't interest you. :D

I was a bit confused as well since Tesla doesn't usually reveal this stuff (to find out if we had HW3 hardware we had to see if cones would show up in the visualization) but apparently they now do.

Hence, Toms assumed that most 3s and Ys produced in Fremont since then will have new hardware.

Before you hit up a supercharger it needs some amount of battery conditioning. If you set one as your destination, it'll do it on the way there. Allegedly the issue is that the battery is being prioritized on the coolant loop so it does make sense.

Our car took some patches to a day as well. The A4 B8, though it has the RMC infotainment and is a 2011 so it no longer gets them. I think we updated it's infotainment once or twice, which also resulted in locking of the green hidden menu (probably by service). There have been updates to infotainment systems in modern cars during the past 10-15 years. You typically don't "need" them but some crapper tier reliability cars such as newer Alfa Romeos make use of them to fix their crappy problems. Tesla just has a fancy infotainment with unnecessary garbage included, such as Pixel Car Heroes or whatever the hell somebody wants their kid to watch on the side...

I'm actually telling them that all the day when they actually make such fancy cars today. ;)

Heck, even the taxis I've been in are good for what they're worth, and those are the very base sedans that kick 750k on the odometer with just a check engine light due to the taxi driver not giving sheet. Hyundai has come to a point I'd put them right above the sleeve of the garbage reliability Volkswagon brand you talked about down there...

My car has an atom-based MCU but thankfully isn't affected by overheating.
It does however have many quirks due to being electric and that's just part & parcel of new tech, everyone here should appreciate that.
In fact, I'm quite shocked how many people on a tech forum are motoring Luddites. Having owned and driven an EV I will not go back to dinosaur juice.

Dumb cars last decades. Smart cars will be like smartphones, dying in less than a decade. I don't know why anyone wants what happened to phones to happen to their car.

Dont really get this remark, what makes a smartphone "Die" in less than a decade?

Uhm, dealerships are full of RMA Talismans. Renault had to do recalls for some engines in the early series...

Atom solutions are a bit lackluster indeed, as seen on Q50 / Q60 and the rest of the newer Infiniti SUVs. As expected from Atom... it's still a fine infotainment though. When specced, comes with 360 cams and whatnot on the Infinitis. Better car if you snag the older hybrid at a good price... packs quite a punch when the battery is fully charged, low 4 sec on the 0-60. It's a 50 something HP hybrid engine so not really as lackluster as the mild hybrids you get today.

I'd agree that ICE is dino juice, but with most EVs there's still range anxiety and the alike. You're mostly stuck with a car using a hoard load of li-on when even better battery technologies have been available for long... not to mention the prices of good EVs.

Good ICE still holds some ground and I would say this for the next 5 years as well - until electric gets a superior adaptation down most places over the globe.

It's the CPU for entertainment, not functionality as in self driving. If i'm correct the Tesla is even redundant setup, 2 CPU's for exactly the same task.

Over the Air patches yea, that is some crazy stuff, but they've had firmware patches for computer controlled fuel injection for 3, almost 4 decades now. We don't normally see them or hear about them because Ye Olde car manufacturers don't publicize it. Tesla is under a microscope and everything they do good or bad is talked about everywhere and public information. Most people have a stance on Tesla, love them, hate them, don't trust them, drool over them but don't have the money. Personally, I used to be a manual transmission kind of driver. As the years went by, I got sick of dealing with a clutch on a hill or in a traffic jam to eventually really disliking driving because I was forced to commute an hour a day to have a decent job. Now that I work from home, I don't hate driving anymore. I would, however, be perfectly happy letting a computer get me safely and comfortably to the destination of my choosing.

the Atom is more than fine for any driving and infotainment functions. It's that other BS that Elon wants that the Atom really struggles with (web browser, Youtube app, games), where the Ryzen is orders of magnitude faster. I never use any of those functions unless properly stuck in traffic or supercharging

+1 just existing makes some people feel oddly insecure. I guess it's not acceptable to like both - either love em or think they're demon spawn. It's hard for me to go back to a dino burner but that hasn't changed the fact that I still like my gas V8 trucks. But since gas is $2.20/L, I'm more than content with watching as an outsider who charges at home.

we have also a '22 model Y that might be under this recall. I'll have to check

I'm just wondering how shitty the cooling must be for these things to overheat, I can't imagine them being more than 25-30W TDP.

A car should be dumb car. A car should not have automatic transmission. Everything driver controlled or where is the fun.... and oh by the way, a car should never have anything created by AMD.
Your horse awaits

I would guess the active cooling isn't powering on in the charging/pre-charging state, and the update fixes that or lowers the clocks
They're likely cooled by the same fans cooling the batteries

Let me guess, they fitted a far more powerful APU but didn't address the higher thermal requirements for cooling it and somehow this is AMD's fault. The headline is a bit of a joke. Any cpu can overheat if not adequately cooled. Tesla no doubt nickel and dimed the engineering to save a few cents but still charge champagne prices.
