Valve, handlers of the world's most popular digital games store and manufacturers of the Steam Deck, have announced that they've been able to more than double weekly production of the handheld console. Due to the production "picking up", as Valve says it, the company expects to double the number of handhelds shipped each week. This is especially good news for users that were expecting to receive their devices in the 3Q - shipments for these particular orders will begin on June 30th.

Valve doesn't make it clear what exactly was bottlenecking production. Manufacturing and logistics have been showing signs of normalization following a couple of years with snag after snag due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent war in Ukraine. Overwhelming demand for graphics chips across the product spectrum may have pushed Valve to accept a smaller pie of AMD chips than the company would like to, and might be one of the reasons the company was forced to extend deliveries of pre-orders for the device.

At the same time, a number of components experienced bottlenecks, overwhelming demand, and a price crunch following lowered supply, including power regulating chips and even some battery-related materials, so the issue might not be entirely related to the APU itself - as much as AMD has had its hands full - for a while - with providing chips not only for its discrete cards, but also for the latest-generation consoles. All in all, this is great news for Steam Deck users in Valve's waitlist, as their order could be shipped that much faster.

Am I the only one who doesn't see any logic nor value, with the release of this SteamDeck console? I mean why would I want to play a PC game on a handheld console?? I have my phone for that.

Same day this hits the news:
Valve drops an announcement that availability will be better.

Anyway, it looks like other companies are also picking up manufacturing devices that were basically impossible to manufacture for some time. For instance, Sony has just resumed production of their A7 II cameras after it was suspended due to parts shortage.

How? do you like use that streaming tech to stream it from your pc to your phone? because you phone does not have the pc library of games available.

Ok but thats a mod from someone experimenting right? nothing to do with Valve officially so I dont see how its really related or how its up to valve to cover anything up.
Its kinda like Sony would announce that they are ramping up production on the PS5 and then you saying they are trying to cover up "the whole PS5 dying with the "Slim" mod from DIYperks".

Isn't this term used when the manufacturer is at fault? In this case, it's people deciding to mod their own device voiding their warranty to "save" a couple a bucks on the version with more storage.

Because touch controls are an abomination and mounting a phone to a controller is janky?

so wait you are mad at Valve because of someones mod?
Not mad, just that throwing a nothing burger positive headline is a good way to make sure that the previous a bit negative one posted on the same day gets buried.

Sweet. I can't wait. I will be getting mine in a couple weeks.

Can your phone play steam games natively? I also prefer as small of phone as possible, rather than buying a tablet to use as a phone. I am rather excited to play my steam games anywhere.

No, it can't. but most can be played pretty cleanly over Steamlink.

The last time I took a trip, I hooked my phone and one s controller, and got decent streaming performance upon arrival. On the plane, I played Retroarch .

The Steamdeck only purpose is for those who expect to be cutoff completely from a fat pipe / or for some reason think the weight of a good ultra portable laptop is too heavy (and are willing to put up with a tiny screen in-exchange).

steam decks handheld controls are fixed, so you'd better like them the way they are (instead of say, attaching that bluetoothj one-s controller to any laptop!) You also have a much poorer screen quality than the OLEDs most mid-range phone now ship with!)

I did not enjoy steam link on my phone. My 5 inch phone screen felt too small for gaming. I do not want to carry a 7 inch tablet around all the time so I can occasionally play games. Touch screen controls were awful. It wasn't worth obtaining a controller for my phone.

A nice ultra portable gaming laptop would not work at all. A laptop would be impractical to bring with me to bed, to the toilet, back to bed again. A laptop might work okay to play games while I sit on the couch with my partner but I wouldn't do it. Even an ultra portable laptop wouldn't work well during a road trip. I have no imterest in buying a laptop. It isn't even a worthwhile comparison.

The Steam Deck feels good in my hands. I have heard that people with small hands struggle.

I really miss having a handheld, non-phone, gaming device like I used to with Nintendo products. I thought about getting a Switch. There are few games on the platform that I want and the games are expensive. In comparison a Steam Deck comes with my entire existing steam library, cheaper games on average, and isn't locked to a walled garden. I am not locked into buying from steam. I can buy from and play games purchased on other stores. The Steam Deck is exactly the kind of device I want.

It seems some people really don't understand the appeal of the Steam Deck. That's okay. You don't have to buy one. People like me will buy them and be happy. I did not have to explain my reasons. I hope it helps alleviate some peoples confusion.

When you're forced to make a decision between two different fixed functions in a laptop, but cant afford to own a dozen different models, you have to make the value call. THIS IS THE ONLY REASON why Steam Deck will never sell in the millions ( like full-fat windows laptops, or regular consoles)!

I have no interest in a laptop personally. Who is claiming the Steam Deck will sell millions of units? I don't think anyone expects it to. Thank you captain obvious. It's not like you are going to see Steam Decks in common retailers like Best Buy or Walmart.

The best estimates I have seen predict that Valve has sold approximately 1 million units. Valve isn't sharing that information so all we have are estimates. Given how long the reserved line is, I don't think Valve expected even this many units to sell either. The Steam Deck is selling better than I ever thought it would.

There is no way a Steam Deck would sell in comparable numbers to consoles. Valve would probably be lucky to break two million if they weren't supply constrained. Valve didn't even expect as much demand as they have had.

I never said it would sell as well as the 2 consoles, but I do believe there is a big market for this.

Maybe after Valves gets the software to a better place. SteamOS has improved by leaps and bounds since March but still isn't where it needs to be. SteamOS has to be almost perfect for people used to the ease of use from a Switch or other consoles. That is a high bar to pass. Even if the software was perfect, I do not think it would sell anywhere near as well as a Switch. Maybe we have different ideas of what a big market is.

The steam deck haters in this thread are interesting. As a pc gamer you should be happy that it’s a thing, not be behaving threatened. It sells more than enough and no a smart phone is not comparable at all and streaming games is terrible, have fun with the occasional lags and bad controls.

Good timing. Was about ready to cancel my reservation after watching videos on 3 consecutive new releases that are leap-frogging The Deck generationally.

Valve isnt at fault there. They are protecting their customers and themselves. If someone uses the nvme mod and burns up their steam deck in the process, the customer is going to go to valve and complain and/or try and sue when it was the customers fault in the first place when they didnt put the thermal pads back where they belong. The valve engineer had every right to tell people to not do it and what the problem would be if they did it anyway.

It's not hate. Usually most of the games found on Steam are best playable with mouse and keyboard. That's why we have PC/laptops. Playing a 3D shooter optimized for PC, with controls on the phone, is a big nono imo. Or a strategy game. Or a point and click game. Etc, etc.

Can you carry your PC around you everywhere? You can't even do that with a laptop. With a steam deck you can. And the controls aren't that bad. You're literally picking examples that aren't good for controllers. Talk it down then, who cares.

Steam deck is already heavy enough to require a dedicated bag - why not bump your carry weight an additional pound, and make your way up to 12-13 inch ultra-portable (complete wit a much more functional screen, hardware keyboard, and none of the decks massive cooling issues?)

you're also glossing over the largest detail : not everyone liked the Steam Controller (and instead of just having hardware d-pads like everyone else including the switch, you're still stuck with abomination!) there's a huge amount of compromise for something that needs to be easy to get sales!
