Not to mention cold offline storage.

I have a bunch of 2,5 Inch HHDs in USB enclosures to backup files. I'm not gonna do that on SSDs, as it's just not safe for long time.
I've read that SSD's will lose data if left unpowered for long periods but I left my old Samsung 850 Pro 128GiB unpowered for two years or so and it still retained all the data.

It really depends but it does happen.

Hard disk won’t go away because of the market that’s very hungry for storage. In the age of data, you need lots of storage. Having said that, retail users generally don’t need that much hard disk space and we can see that sales have been declining. With MS looking to eliminate mechanical drive in the next few years, retail demand for hard drives will take a dive. Ultimately, it’s these companies may consolidate further. In my opinion, both WD and Toshiba are better positioned since they are also active in manufacturing SSDs. While Seagate produces SSDs as well, but I think they market penetration may not be anywhere near WD and Toshiba.
