Apple has issued a warning to Boot Camp users that their beta software is on track to expire this month. The company's latest tech support posting for the software warns: "As indicated in the license agreement for Boot Camp Beta, the Boot Camp Beta program expires when Mac OS 10.5 Leopard becomes available publicly in October, 2007." The note explains that the license to use Boot Camp Beta 1.2 or earlier expired on 30 September, requiring users to upgrade to Boot Camp 1.4, which will work a little longer. The Boot Camp 1.4 license is set to expire when Mac OS X 10.5 is made available to the public. Apple has not yet disclosed a date for this release. "To continue using Boot Camp at that time, upgrade to Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard," the company warns. Previous reports have indicated Apple may release a version of Boot Camp for use with Mac OS X 10.4, but the company's existing technical support warning offers no information as to such future plans

Great tactic by Apple as usual. Too bad it also screws their users, also as usual.

And to think Apple's selling point is getting away from Microsoft's "forced" upgrades and Mac people love to bring it up in arguments. I can't count how many times I have heard "Yeah, well Microsoft is forcing you to upgrade to Vista by only allowing DX10 on Vista" from a Mac fanboy arguing that you never have to upgrade their OS. At least with Microsoft they don't disable current features on your OS unless you upgrade.

Having a user that is required to dual boot his Mac for work with XP will bootcamp come as part of 10.5 or will he be SOL on being able to continue to use his XP install?

First read my post, its not me and its not my system. My concern is real, as there are many people out there that have purchased Apples under the possible false impression that they could actually use them with Windows in the work environment.

I have a friend that just bought one of those stupidly over-priced 17in macbook pros. 3,000 dollars on a COMPUTER?! Yea right! The day after she bought it, there were rumors online about the new set of macbook's coming out for Nov / Dec along with Leopard. Not really on topic... but I hate apple! I actually don't have anything against them directly, because they're a corporation and they act like it. It's the stupid people that think there is absolutely zero competition to apple and that everything they do is the grace of God that have made me hate it. I stupidly got one of those 30gig videos a year ago, and I wish I had gotten ANYTHING else. Even a Zune! Wow, what a useless rant. I'm done!

They cost that much because their hardware is much better.

Yes it is, when speaking of laptops, but it is at a stiff premium. Which is why I don't have an Apple laptop, I can't justify the premium for what amounts to a better screen, trackpad, and chassis.

And I completely forgot about Boot Camp expiring. We have an iMac that my fiance uses for schooling. Her school stuff is web based, and only runs on IE on Windows. It's on XP right now, guess I better not shut it off or reboot for a while.

Just upgrade to Bootcamp 1.4 and sabatoge 10.5, then they'll have to support it forever ; )

I do agree the hardware in a higher end apple laptop is better than most of the pc standards, particularly in the screen and chassy department. I've always liked apple displays . . . but oddly never owned one . . .
How high do you have to go with pc laptops to pay $3k however . . .

The screen definitely isn't any better. My Macbook Pro's screen doesn't look or feel any better than my E1520's, the trackpad also isn't any better, but it is missing a button(does that make it better?). The only advantage the Macbook Pro has is how thin it is, which for some is a great selling point, hell I have to admit I like it, but certainly not worth any premium over the slightly thicker Dell. Which is why I bought the Dell and only have the Macbook because my work gave me it.

I think the screen is worlds better, in terms of color reproduction compared to any of the Dells. Also, I like the size of the Mac's trackpad, along with the ability to scroll using 2 fingers.

But alas, I agree that I would probably just get a Dell or ASUS laptop, due to the price premium of the MacBook Pros

They are. It's called buying Leopard. It's been in the EULA from day 1, that boot camp beta expires. It comes stock in Leopard, so to keep dual booting, you'll have to upgrade. Wise move from Apple from a business standpoint, but sucks for the consumer. Oh well, at least Leopard is only $130, so it could be worse.
