Was thinking the exact same thing. This will be outdated as soon as it drops. It's literally just a 980 Pro. No real difference in performance to speak of. And the 4TB version (which is something the 980 series never had) will be releasing NEXT year. By then Seagate, WD, Gigabyte Aorus, Sabrent and Crucial will all have their Gen5's out.
Gen 5’s increase in bandwidth doesn’t automatically translate to better USABLE performance. REAL WORLD performance is indicated by RANDOM read/write operations, not sequential. The increases in random performance come from improvements in the NAND chips, not the PCIE interface.

I’m willing to bet that this drive will perform better than the first wave of PCIE 5.0 drives. I don’t know if you guys read the press release, but Samsung is stating a FIFTY FIVE PERCENT INCREASE IN RANDOM PERFORMANCE. So this is indeed a different drive from the 980 Pro.

It's probably a stop-gap money waster to keep them afloat until 8 months down the line when they release the 1080 Pro series which will be PCI-E Gen5 and offer all that the 990 Pro does plus more.

980 Pro was a 6000/5000 drive. This is 7400/6900 so it is faster.
Is this still running on Elpis?
I would guess so. Atleast Samsung has not annouced any new controllers. Im guessing it is running higher layer count NAND and that's where the extra performance comes from.
Crucial already has a Gen5 almost ready, I'd rather just get that one, even if I only had a Gen4 slot, because it will max out that slot, same as a Gen4 going in a Gen3 slot.
That's my plan also despite the fact that i have Gen4 slot.
