Minisforum Announces UM690 Mini-PC with AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX and Superfast USB4

Minisforum has launched a new mini PC UM690 of its Venus Series. The new UM690 featuring AMD Ryzen 9 6900HX, AMD Radeon 680M Integrated Graphics, DDR5 dual-channel memory, PCIe 4.0 SSD, and the most advanced USB4 Type-C port. It is also their first mini PC with AMD 6000 series CPU.

Ryzen 9 6900HX is one of AMD's most powerful Ryzen 6000 processors, features 8 cores and 16 threads, with a maximum turbo clock of 4.90 GHz with a default TDP targeted at 45 W. The integrated GPU, Radeon 680M, based on RDNA2 architecture, has 12 CUs up to 2.4 GHz. Thanks to liquid metal and smart fan in thermal design, UM690 can run at low noise even in full speed. UM690 supports total up to 64 GB dual-channel DDR5-4800 MHz memory, also different types of storage expansions—1×M.2 2280 PCIe 4.0 SSD and 1×2.5 inch SATA HDD Slot (SATA 3.0 6.0 Gb/s 7 mm).



The USB4 port on UM690 supports a maximum transfer speed of 40 Gbps, and Alt Mode for DisplayPort and Thunderbolt. It also allows users to connect a discrete graphics card with a docking station to the machine.

With one USB4 port and two HDMI ports, UM590 can connect to three monitors simultaneously with maximum resolution of two 4K@60 Hz and one 8K@60 Hz (via USB4).

Anutha nice looking, well-spec'd mini-me box from minisforum, but $500 for a barebones model is a tad steep IMO....and getting it with 16GB of ram + a 512GB drive pre-installed moves that up to $650, then you still have to add the OS, which will turn this into a moderately expensive, albeit small & space-saving machine

But OTOH, it does have 2.5G Lan, TB4 and gen 4 slots, so there's that !

The sub $500 desktop died a long time ago. Spending less than $1000 on a desktop can even be an iffy proposition.

two other points:
1. Current Computer technology lasts easily double to triple the time of a computer from a decade ago. A sub $500 PC from 2005 to 2015 could easily be thrown away after one year. A $1000 PC today can last 3+ years with snappy response and good performance across a broad range of applications. Thank SSDs and super cheap RAM for that. You invest more upfront but keep longer. Buyer beware sub $500 complete machines. This is the realm of chromebooks and crappy tablets.

2. This mini PC has AMDs top mobile chip that typically goes into $2000+ laptops. A product with this chip will not sell for under $500. Look at Ryzen 3, i3, Celerons and Pentiums for that kind of pricing.

Also, do they list what the TDP limit is for the 6900HX in this box? I'm reading performance scales pretty severely with power, up to 20% higher GPU performance going from 25W to 50W

This is just a short press release. If you want more details, contact the manufacturer.

As for the notebook question, ask notebook manufacturers. Minisforum doesn't make them and they don't know the product roadmaps of notebook manufacturers. And it's unlikely any random schmuck in an online Q&A forum (not just here at TPU) knows all of those plans either.

Some people find it fun to speculate on unannounced products but doing so doesn't provide any useful data points for a purchase decision.

Probably because Minisforum thinks they will sell more with an x86-64 CPU than with an ARM CPU.

Just a guess.

The compact/SFF x86-64 market has been a longtime core business for Minisforum.

There is already a Xiaomi at 1100 € and an ACER 16" at 1500 €. (6800 not 6900 but that doesn't change much)

Qualcomm is not that competitive yet. If they could match M1 that would be awesome.

Would rather wait for the Strix 7900HX version.

Gotcha, must've glazed over that 45W detail, my bad.

And Gargf pointed me in the right direction for some 6800HS laptops that would also work, I've been looking for a replacement for my aging XPS 9550 and the Zen3+ parts look like a good fit.
