Some details of Windows XP SP3 have been released, with the bulk of changes simply being a collection of hotfixes and patches - altogether there will be 1,073 patches and hotfixes in SP3 which were not included in previous service packs (114 addressing security issues, the rest being for performance and reliability). However, there are four completely new features included with SP3, mainly being backported from Vista:
  • New Windows Product Activation model: no need to enter product key during setup
  • Network Access Protection modules and policies have been brought to XP after being one of the more-well-received features in Windows Vista. You can read more about NAP here
  • New Microsoft Kernel Mode Cryptographic Module - the Windows XP SP3 kernel now includes an entire module that provides easy access to multiple cryptographic algorithms and is available for use in kernel-mode drivers and services.
  • New "Black Hole Router" detection - Windows XP SP3 can detect and protect against rogue routers that are discarding data
The new service pack will be compatible with all versions of Windows XP, including Embedded, Fundamentals, Start, Media Center, Home and Professional Editions.

No and it likely wont come, but this is a first SP3 I can remember for any windows product, aside from perhaps a server product.

LoL There are both server and client version of Windows 2000. And yes 2k is on SP4, not sure about NT.

So is SP3 still beta or is it final? I noticed BOSE said he was using it.

Seems like a good service pack, however, I wouldn't be surprised if DX 10 was never made available on XP. :ohwell:

It's only beta, so BOSE is using the beta version. No final yet.

Im using Beta, version 3205.

Heres my personal expirience so far. I did a fresh reinstall of WinXP. Tried to install SP3 but i got error, so i had to install SP2 first, then installed SP3. Went to MS WinUpdate site to DL latest patches, but there arent any patches available for DL at all. It seems that everything is included in SP3 package now. Very convenient.

Now the bad part. Once you install SP3, you no longer have the option to DL these things from Win Update webiste; IE7, WMP 11, NET Framework 3.0. This things youll have to manually DL and install them from MS main website.

And PC Probe II work fine now. So is everything else so far; programs and games.

The only thing that'll force us to a Vista switch.

Remember when Windows XP was launched with DirectX 9, Microsoft also released DX9 for Windows 98/Me? Don't expect MS to do that now, DX10 for Windows XP. Because then every gamer will switch back to a pirated Windows XP. Already a lot of us gamers are totally pissed with the gaming platform Vista gives us. Games run at lower FPS than the same in XP, NO DirectSound = No EAX 2.0 acceleration for "non-Creative" sound-cards, forcing us to buy a $100 sound-card just for the ALchemy extensions. If MS releases DX-10 for Windows XP, then it's bye-bye Vista from 75% of us "sensible" users would switch-back. While other "wow-struck" Aero-gapers would stay back.

1st. MS will stop selling XP in 5 months. So no DX10 for you either way.

2nd. Alky project is a dead end. Its been around for a year and it has nothing to show for.

3rd. There are alot more average daily users then gamers 10 fold. Thus even if all gamers went back to XP, it wouldn't make a dent to Vista sales.

4th. Eventualy, MS will shut down all their support servers for XP just like they did for Win98/95; thus youll have no choice but to go with Vista soon or later.

Haha, I've never used MS support... MS support has nothing to do with me using an OS.

MS Support, as in MS Windows Update website where every one gets their patches and updates.

Yes, there are other websites where you can DL your updates and patches, but even those website will go down just like they did for Win98/95.
