Phison Electronics Corp., a global leader in NAND flash controller and storage solutions, announced that its latest flagship enterprise PCIe 4.0 X1 SSD solution, which was developed in partnership with Seagate was awarded the 2023 Taiwan Excellence Award. "We are very pleased that Phison's enterprise PCIe 4.0 X1 SSD solution has received this honor," said K.S. Pua, CEO or Phison. "For Taiwanese products, the mark of Taiwan Excellence is associated with innovative values that are renowned in the international market for excellence and quality."

The Taiwan Excellence Awards were established by the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan in 1993. Every year, eligible candidates are subjected to a rigorous and stringent selection system that covers four major aspects of R&D, Design, Quality, and Marketing to identify outstanding products that offer "Innovative Value" while satisfying the key criterion of being "made in Taiwan." Products that have been selected for the Taiwan Excellence Awards will serve as domestic industry examples while being promoted by the government in the international market to shape the creative image for Taiwanese businesses.




The Phison Enterprise X1 SSD solution is Taiwan's first enterprise PCIe 4.0 SSD developed from its own technology. It has also passed the rigorous verification test of Seagate, a world leader in mass-data storage infrastructure solutions and Phison's partner.

Much sad. I was hoping for small AIC form factors - but I guess you can get M.2 adapters.

I was hoping that having 1x NVMe drives would be a good solution to replacing SATA drives for the cheap end of the SSD market, and PCI-E gen 4 x1 has more than three times as much bandwidth as SATA, so could make for faster and cheaper drives than current SATA drives.!

There are NVMe drives that offer better price to performance and size and those are U.2 enterprise drives. The consumer space is pretty poor value in comparison. 8TB QVO is more expensive then a WD SN200 7.68TB by $200 USD while being slower (the SN200 uses PCIe 3.0 x4). Not to mention the large gap in endurance.

The M.2 factor used in consumer motherboards is pretty restricting but there's also a lot of price gouging for anything over 2TB in the M.2 form factor and a lot of the cheaper SATA drives like the MX500 have horrid endurance ratings often less than half the Samsung QVO.

That hilarious, I was thinking the same thing and that maybe for some reason 1x PCIe drives would be better for large arrays of drives. Kind of like more spindles = more IOPS in the spinning rust days.

It is an enterprise level SSD controller that uses a PCI-E generation 4 with x4 (four) lanes. Hence why I think that this was a really stupid name for the product.!

I really don't understand what they were smoking when they named this, usually marketing dept. wants to oversell/overhype the product, not the opposite

Anyone looking for a PCIe SSD will look at this and think it's a gimped product against the competition. I guess it's saving grace is that physon (afaik) doesn't sell ssd's and surely the guys selling storage (like partner seagate) will come up with smarter names for the product line

What does that mean? First manufactured in taiwan? First designed from the ground up with asic blocks instead of a couple arm cores? Other option?

I be thinking at least twice before buying a SSD with a Phison controller even if they improved 100%. I have had two SSD's fail on my other the years.

Apart from a few SSD's that are wholly made by the parent company (Samsung is a clear example).

Which companies make SSD's with Phison controllers.? I know it's a lot, so specifics IMHO are absolutely necessary. What was the brand, the model and capacity, and how was it used.? The answers to those questions IMHO would clear the air, and help people focus on the details.

Well found one which is based on the PHISON PS3108-S8 ( about 12 years old now ) sold though Teamgroup called the L3, i had 2 of these fail, one within warranty and 2(1w was a replacement) after warranty.

I believe they had a few sketchy ones after that too and more recently.
