1st. MS will stop selling XP in 5 months. So no DX10 for you either way.

2nd. Alky project is a dead end. Its been around for a year and it has nothing to show for.

3rd. There are alot more average daily users then gamers 10 fold. Thus even if all gamers went back to XP, it wouldn't make a dent to Vista sales.

4th. Eventualy, MS will shut down all their support servers for XP just like they did for Win98/95; thus youll have no choice but to go with Vista soon or later.

M$ - 1 / Us - 0

a. MS released DX9 for Win98 after it stopped selling Win98.
b. Try running Doom 3 / BioShock on Vista and check for its EAX 4 HD without ALchemy. Absolutely no game runs above EAX 3.0 without ALchemy on Vista. ALchemy is alive and kicking.
c. I am talking in context only of gamers and enthuisiasts. You cannot deny atleast every DX9 / OGL2 game runs faster and better on WinXP with EAX 5 HD.
d. Support for WinXP: Who'd need security updates with good security sofware in place.
e. I agree I'll have to quit XP, though I'll hate doing it.

1 The game uses OpenAL, thus you dont need ALchemy.

2 As of today, almost every DX9 game runs equivalent on both OS's; XP and Vista. And once the New patches come out for Vista, wont need XP anymore.

3 One of main reasons people stick with XP today, besides drivers support and some older games working better on it, is that with XP you can DL and use a pirated version for years to come. But with Vista, activating a pirated copy is a pain in the rear.

4 If you dont use security updates and patches, then you are the biggest fool there is.

ALchemy is nothing but vendor-specific OpenAL made by Creative. Name any other vendors for OpenAL? There aren't any. Besides EAX 5.0 operations run inside a nested server OpenAL process , ALchemy. Just like GL_NV_distance_fog is an NVIDIA-specific GL extension, Creative made all its EAX DSPs as extensions of ALchemy. So unless another chipset manufacturer acquires a license to use EAX 5.0 from creative, his OpenAL will lack EAX 5 HW acceleration, because as we know, unlike OpenGL, OpenAL really doesn't have an ARB (Architecture Review Board) in place. So big players like Creative run the show.

You're right, I am a fool, who lives in the past vis-a-vis all those who refused to leave Win98 when Win XP was the new bitc* in town. Sooner or later I'll make a switch, don't worry.

I dont use Creative products, so the ALchemy out the window. And the original topic was about ALchemy making DX10, and not about who uses it for sound support. So way off topic here.

As far as DX10 for WinXP, it wont happen. MS has officially announced SP3 package and they have in the past have made several statements that there wont be DX10 for XP.

But for some odd reason, people keep believing in their own small world, that there will be DX10 for XP. Vista been out for almost a year, and SP3 package will be out on the same month Vista was released plus 1 year.

Thus the whole thing about ALchemy making DX 10 for XP, it wont happen, theyve been working on it for almost a year and have nothing to show for.

Im not worried if you make a switch or not, thats up to you, ill have to make the switch as well, but the decision will be made for both of us.

I said MS won't release DX 10 for XP, didn't say it wasn't in the works. There is a group working on DX 10 for XP as we speak.

They install when i install OS :). SP2 are tweaked to install on a system better than single pakages.

Spending $87 on a promo copy of WIN XP Pro x64 or @ Newegg at $133 is cheaper and more hassle free. all though i did get it about 2 year ago now. And no even back then i was not having the problems that a lot were having.

All though the prices are getting better for Vista at this time i just need the rubbish that comes with it like DRM. Never mind MS on about replacing it in such a short time.

BUT anyways i do hope there's much more to this SP3 than there telling.
