NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Could Get a Price Cut to Better Compete with RDNA3

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 graphics card has been out since mid-November and is a great performer in many resolutions and titles. However, with NVIDIA setting its price tag at $1200, it is an expensive product to afford and represents a considerable price jump compared to older xx80 GPU generations. According to MyDrivers, NVIDIA could lower the price starting in mid-December, to better suit the needs of consumers and have a competitive product. With AMD's RDNA3-based graphics cards releasing in the following days, the Radeon RX 7900 XTX costing $999 is a direct competitor to GeForce RTX 4080. If NVIDIA plans to cut the massive MSRP of the RTX 4080, then we expect it to be in the range of Radeon RX 7900 XTX to create better market competition.

Of course, this is only wishful thinking and a rumor that MyDrivers has reported, so we have to wait until the middle of this month to find out if NVIDIA announces the alleged price cut.

With RX 7000 getting released, Nvidia will just put the real price tag on that card, which probably is $1000-$1100. The 4090 got scalped, the ENTIRE 3000 series got horrendously scalped. Scalpers are a sign that the market is willing to pay more for your product than MSRP -- there's still 'meat on the bone' so to speak.

the 6500xt never got scalped and the 4080 is a pretty terrible scalper target as well, which just shows they're closer the 'actual' market price with MSRP than they were for the 4090 or Ampere.

I have a feeling there won't be many 7900 series around either. The scalping opportunity will dry up either when they supply enough cards, and saturate the market, or the price gets high enough to squeeze them out of profit -- or some combination of the two.

Yes the 7900xtx is way more aggressively priced than the 4080, but I would be shocked to see one available for purchase using meat fingers for less than $1300 in the first 6 months.

at $1199 the 4080 right now is not available around me - anything ready to buy is $100+ over msrp.

No it's not. 3090 was overpriced by at least $500 when it launched and the 3090Ti was overpriced by at least $800, that's assuming that the +14GB of VRAM is worth ~$200.

That's the wrong mentality. We can only hope RDNA3 to be successful so that Nvidia loses market share. And down the road we can also hope Intel to became a true competitor so we have 3 companies competing against each other. RDNA 3 bringing down prices of RTX 4080 so that people buy an RTX 4080 at $1000 and even feel thankful to Nvidia for lowering prices, is BAD. Nvidia needs to LOSE market share. And badly.

3000 series was selling in a mining craze era. RTX 4090 came after that era with people being in such a great need of a GPU that they probably gone way over their budget. They where starving for a fast GPU. The 6500XT has an AMD sticker on it, meaning consumers weren't willing to buy it, while the press had no problem to burn it on sight. Also it wasn't good for mining.
RX 7900 XT/X will also be bad scalping options, because of their lower performance in RT. People will not buy an RX 7900XT/X at prices close to RTX 4080, because even if RTX 4080 loses in raster, it will be winning in RT. Even people wanting to pay extra for raster, if they see the price close to that of an RTX 4090(meaning about $200-$300), will probably just go with that option.

So when the RTX 5080 cost $1700 it will be reasonable because it will be faster than then $1400-1500 4090ti by then. RTX 6080 will be reasonable at $2200-2400 an so on

No eventually they will just lose market share and have to lower prices. It's just slow and unpredictable.

I'm a pessimist here regarding prices of both big brands. Well yeah mr. leather jacket can cut the msrp by a $100 - not gonna change the picture a lot. I imagine $999 7900XTXs will all be scooped up day1 while actual AIB cards from Sapphire/MSI/Asus that are on its level performance-wise will be 1100$+. Plus there won't be any cards anywhere around this price here in EU anyway, meaning everyone here will be choosing between €1400 4080s and €1200 7900XTX. I already know where 80% of the market will go.

That "Get better, Nvidia" is so wrong in so many ways. Why would Nvidia get better, when the consumer spots the huge price increase and instead of saying "Good buy Nvidia, I am going with the competition", they just beg Nvidia to "Get better"? If I was Nvidia, seeing that "Get better, Nvidia", I would be putting a $1499 price tag in the RTX 5080.

The 4080's worth is defined by a market performance/$ curve.

Currently the curve is a bit fuzzy and undefined at the top end of the range beyond about $800 due to wild variations in 3090/3090Ti/4080/4090 pricing, scalping, and lack of competition.

When the 7900-series lands, there will NEED to be adjustments to fit everything back to the curve because at the moment Nvidia are flexing their unconstrained, unchallenged greed.

Totally agree with everything except the 7900xt xtx being a bad scalping option. I think those are going to be unobtanium.

Let's hope AMD will have a huge supply and consumers not scalpers, buy those cards.

I honestly don’t think a 4080 is worth more than $800 to me, but ultimately it will depend on where the 7900XT lands performance wise. The 4080 is likely to be faster than the XT and slower than the XTX so sadly it’ll still be a grand.

So, with inflation, $1100 is a $300 increase from 3080->4080. By your logic, the next 80 should be $1400+inflation and so on... Really cool prices in some years.
