Would be nice if we could get these down to the $100 category. But that's still very long off.
Of course you can just get a used X540 for $100, only problem is that it only supports 1GbE and 10GbE, not the speeds inbetween.

The current revision includes Category 5e (100 MHz), 6 (250 MHz), 6A (500 MHz), and 8 (2,000 MHz). Categories 7 and 7A were not officially recognized by TIA and were generally only used outside the United States. Category 8 was published with ANSI/TIA‑568‑C.2‑1 (June 2016) [8] to meet the performance specification intended by Category 7. ​

Hmmmmm so CAT 8 is a thing since 2016 wow!! I haven't been keeping up.

Marvell Aquantia must be having supply chain issues for these to sell for $300.

Back in January 2022 I bought two of the single-port Gigabyte GC-AQC113C for $99 each. You can still buy the single-port Asus XG-C100C with the older (but same speed) AQC108 for $93.

For $300 you can get a dual port Intel X710 (e.g. QNAP QXG-10G2T-X710).
