2bytes Corp. released their first gameplay footage of Space Gears, being developed by their game studio, Pentapeak Studios, on their Steam page. Space Gears is a sci-fi, strategy game that has players terraform Mars with an army of mechs. Players must cooperate or compete with each other to gain control over scarce resources on the Red Planet.

The video showcases the game's systems, including land terraforming, base-building, and mech-assembly, as well as its combat system, featuring intense mech-on-mech, squad-based battles. To overcome the limitations of classic RTS games, which have been characterized by difficult and complex micromanaging and a high barrier to entry for new players, the focus was taken off of complex multi-tasking, involving build orders, resource allocation, and base expansions, and instead focused on delivering intuitive combat. Players can enjoy combat and strategy through multiple, fluid and fast-paced PvE and PvP modes that are immersive and easy to play.




Space Gears is planned for release on Steam in Q3 of this year, with detailed game information and a testing schedule to be released in Q2. Game footage will be available on the game's Steam page and official YouTube channel.

"Space Gears is a collective effort of Korean developers who love the sci-fi genre and RTS games," said CEO Ham Young-chul. "We're working hard to bring it to strategy fans around the world on Steam, so stay tuned."
Executive producer of Pentapeak Studios, In-won Lee stated, "After a year of development, we are pleased to announce the game as a pre-alpha build. We're working hard to complete it with over 30 passionate developers," and added, "We are also recruiting members for Pentapeak Studios. We hope you keep an eye on this as well."

Penta Peak Studios is an in-house game development studio founded by 2bytes. In addition to Space Gears, it is developing a meta, match-3 puzzle game for mobile called Stellar Tales. Founded by developers with experience in major Korean game companies such as Nexon, NCsoft, and Wemade, the studio pursues an autonomous and transparent development culture. In the future, Pentapeak Studios plans to develop and present games of complex genres that have not been attempted in Korea in recent years, targeting the global game market.

Must say it - This reminds me of the older "Xenogears/Xenosaga" game franchise that ran for a few years on Sony consoles.

The game has a completely different story line of course in a different setting, the objectives are different for different reasons too so yeah, this one probrably has alot to offer in terms of fun but I just coudn't help but notice these similarities when I saw them and what it reminded me of by name as well.

One of the pics in the opening post (With the girls) has them looking quite like one of the characters from Xenosaga itself (KOS-MOS) in how their suits/clothing appears, the "look" of their hair along with other elements of the room's look presented too - It's almost like it's straight from the Xenosaga series when onboard one of the ships in that game series.

I also noted the similarity in reference to the suits in the game, you have suits here called Space Gears.
The suits in "Xenogears" were all just called "Gears", Xenogears itself, along with being the name of the game was also the name of a specific suit the player got at the end of the game.

Aside from that it looks like it could be alot of fun.

This is not what RTS fans are into. Dumb down base building and resource managing and you alienate a significant percentage of the RTS fanbase.

It's a known fact that most of the RTS genre fanbase fits into the 35-50 years old age bracket. Making a real time strategy game who's selling point is "un-complicated", "explosions" and "fast paced combat" does not appeal to this age group. I know these features are supposed to attract new, young players to the franchise, but this strategy has proven to be a failure time and time again. Why not just cater to the existing fanbase? Give us a well thought out comprehensive game with a good balance of tactics and resource / base management, with a memorable single player campaign and decent multiplayer, and you'll have a hit on your hands. Despite the current economic climate I wouldn't mind shelling out 60e for something like what I described.

The last GOOD RTS game I played was Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance, and that was back in 2007. Command and Conquer 3 and Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak get honorable mentions, but I'd classify them as "decent" rather then "good".

Unfortunately the RTS winter is unlikely to end, such a niche game just wouldnt rake in the 10 million sales companies seem to need to break even today.
