Smartphone specialists Oppo and OnePlus have responded to the rumors of both companies exiting several European markets, as well as the UK. In a joint statement provided to Android Authority the message was a promise to stay put in 2023: "OPPO and OnePlus are committed to all the existing European markets. We had a great start in 2023 with the successful launches of several products in Europe and have a line-up of upcoming products for the rest of the year. As always, OPPO and OnePlus will continue to provide more innovative products and the best-in-class service for users moving forward."
Starting yesterday, industry tipsters issued posts about Oppo and OnePlus withdrawing from markets in Europe, with more immediate exits from key territories - France, Germany, Netherlands and the United Kingdom. The cited reasons for exiting the aforementioned markets include a massive slowdown in regional sales and legal cases levied by competitors in regard to patent infringements on Oppo's part. The lawsuits that were levied by Nokia have resulted in a number of Oppo and OnePlus devices being banned from sale in Germany.
Oppo provided its own statement in response to yesterday's rumors: "The European market has always been one of our key markets. We have made a good start in the European market in 2023, and our business in Europe is as usual. With the successful launch of Find N2 Flip in London and the presentation of our latest technologies and products at MWC 2023, OPPO will continue to focus on user needs and provide more innovative products and services." The OnePlus Europe Press team also released their own statement and issued it to multiple news outlets: "OnePlus will not exit from Europe and the UK and maintains stable operations in local markets. OnePlus will continue to invest in Europe and provide more innovative product and solutions for its users."
The wording of the three statements make clear a promise to stick around for the rest of 2023, but Oppo and OnePlus have not mentioned any goals for 2024 and beyond. Supply chain issues, growing global tensions with China, and a slowdown of smartphone sales are some of the challenges that both companies are contending with. Apple and Samsung have historically strong user bases established in Europe, and numerous Chinese smartphone brands have fought hard to enter and remain in the region. Oppo, OnePlus, Realme and Vivo are reputed to be owned by a Chinese conglomerate called BBK Electronics Corporation. Oppo has used past PR campaigns to deny any connection to BBK, and has refuted notions that the latter is its parent company.
