America to Get 40GB PS3 and PS3 Price-Cuts November 2nd

On November 2nd, $399 will get you a lovely PlayStation3 with a 40GB hard drive, no backwards compatibility whatsoever, and 2 USB ports. This is $50 more than the Xbox360 Premium edition, and $150 more than the Nintendo Wii. On November 2nd, the 80GB PS3 price will be reduced to a mere $500USD. Sony has no comment as to why it took so long to determine when America would get this console.

Looks like I'll be picking up a PS3 here in a few months, though I am going to wait until after the holiday season and hopefully another price cut.

I can tell you why it took sony too long to get this news out to the US. Because guess what what little sales on PS3's they were making are going to drop even further until November 2nd, seriously who would buy A PS3 now if they were educated enough to know that in just a few weeks there will be a new price tag? But hey guess what I wonder how much money Sony is losing now than before when they had the 60 GB model with all those cool features like PS1 and PS2 emulation chips on it. I am still guessing that the costs will outweigh the price even further than before with the 60 GB model purely based on the fact that $200 price cuts cant be made on the production process that quickly.

the 80GB will still play ps2 games right? And it sucks the 40gb wont. Sure, the new games are nice, but there arent alot of them, and its hard to justify theoretically throwing away a game library.

Bleh, PS3 was so hyped up before its launch, even during the launch. Microsoft is outselling them by a lot not just in the U.S., its no surprise to me that Sony is trying to compete by introducing a lower-end product alongside dropping the price

me too. im really on the fence. i would love a blu-ray player now that i have an hdtv. the HD movies on demand look incredible, even with comcast's crappy compression. so i would love to see what a true high def movie looks like in 1080p. plus, the dvd player i own now is progressive but does not upconvert so the movies just dont cut it compared to the HD movies. so the ps3 is a blu-ray player, an upconverter, a ps1 and ps2 console and when good games finally come out for it, a ps3 console

No backward compatibility? Pfft. The 80gb version uses an emulator in place of the EE to make some older games run... that's probably what Sony will do with the 40gb version as well (unless of course, Sony explicitly states somewhere that they won't).

exactly. i got hd tv (going to get a new 1080p lcd soon) and i am going to buy a hd-dvd player for my 360 so that way if it isn't on blu-ray i can get it on hd-dvd. although i wish they would do more dvd/hd-dvd discs. i hate buying it twice.

Worth every penny. And you can run PPC64 distros on it to boot, as long as you properly configure the bootloader. Do it, DO IT!!!. lol.

correction it has some software emulation. It is nowhere near as good as what the original 20GB and 60 GB models had to offer in terms of percent compatibility.

What model are you referring to? The 40GB has ZERO ps1/2 support. The 80GB has emulation support. I never stated how well the 80GB supports ps1/2 titles.

And Wile E. I was reffering to the fact that they both don't have the EE inside of them so they would both have the same emulation support I would assume since they are after all still the same console for the most part on the inside.

I understand what you are trying to say, but Sony already stated that the 40GB model will not play PS1/2 titles. Reverse compatibility has been removed completely for the 40GB, emulation or otherwise. 80GB will still support PS1/2 thru emulation.

$400 is ludicrous? Considering the features, I think it's reasonable. To get a 360 Premium, and the HD-DVD player from MS costs $520.

Wii doesnt support neogeo does it?

Three Neogeo games were released a couple weeks ago with 4 more on the way (Samurai Showdown!!). Support probably came with the Wii update a month or so ago.

Since the Gameboy Player had a short life, and it didn't look like it would hook up anyway... maybe we'll see GB/GBC/GBA games on the Wii as well. Been awhile since I've done Link's Awakening

The US 60GB still has the Emotion Engine in it, so it plays PS1/2 with hardware, not emulation. And I don't know compared to the emulation consoles, but the 60GB upscales ps1/2 games. They look pretty darn good. lol
