Very bold of them to make another VRAM related blog post after the whole fiasco with the 6500 XT launch where they removed their blog post stating 4 GB VRAM GPUs are bad.

Damn.

Guess I should just buy a console huh?
Dunno man, I calculated somewhere else that if I buy a 7900XT now and sell my 1080, I'd spend a total of just over 1K on GPUs over the course of 10-12 years worth of gaming. You can't even stream for that money, whereas I own a multi-decade spanning library of games in all shapes and sizes. Indefinitely, on one platform.

PC gaming on a healthy budget was always about timing your choices right and not upgrading for every fart. If you buy solid GPUs, the ones with asking price above the cost of a console, they last. Gaming doesn't move quite so fast either, that's why its so staggering to see Nvidia's latest run into this kind of trouble so fast. It is deliberate, it is obvious, and its going to hurt its buyers.

We've predicted the death of PC gaming so many times I've lost count - its still going and I think even with the turmoil of late it'll survive just fine. Ups and downs, sure.

The higher we move in tiers, the more green lines we see at the bottom. Also in the 7900XT vs 4070Ti the Perf/$ comparison is missing. I wonder why.

AMD does have a point here, and Hardware Unboxed did offered us a good reason to avoid models that are VRAM limited even today.

Leave it to AMD Unboxed to attempt to pass of the 3070 Ti as a 4K gaming card.

Idk about RE4 RT performance. I do know my gaming experience is Absolutely Freaking Bonkers playing on an XFX 7900 XTX, 5950X, 32GB RAM, 2TB NVMe.

Games play at max settings and a lot of times I'm even making use of the 120hz refresh rate on my OLED...at max settings. This thing's not meant for Nvidia specific-sponsored patches, but those are largely "Look at this shiny thing & don't worry about VRAM fluff pieces". Also, Idgaf about mine craft, quake or cyberjunk... I just drop on my Atmos headphones and hit these mother truckers HARD. The fluidity, freedom and piece of mind I have with 24GB VRAM is certainly nice too. Anyway, I just Love it and can't recommend it enough. I am Stoked for Starfield, Stalker 2, Avatar, Lord of The Rings, Lies of P, Forza, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor SOON and all the UE5 games!! 2023 is just an Epic Year in Gaming and this a GREAT GPU for it and the FUTURE!! I LOVE IT....Hahahahaha ;D

Everyone claiming they're just gonna go buy a $600 console, with few sales, paid online access and poor backwards compatibility all because cards are $600 now, just.....SMH.

Unless some console gives me full access to local files and can run games from every console dating back decades, I'll stick with my flexible PC. Any reasonably powerful PC will be more expensive then a sold-for-a-loss console. Always have been.

Also, console GPU is RTX3060/RX6600XT level - 300£€$ GPUs and these are last-gen.

That's another big part, people forget that console settings are perfectly playable even on RX 5600xts now. You just gotta accept low/meduim settings at 1080p, maybe 1440p with resolution scaling turned down.

Consoles are not running 4k ultra native rez 60+ FPS.

Yea it seems the gen that releases 3/4 years into a console life cycle that can more than handle the new breed of games post cross gen period is ideal so 1080/1080Ti from PS4 gen. 6970/580 from PS3 gen would do well. This go around it seems like RDNA 4 and 5000 series will be the ideal buy in point to last until the PS6 gen is out of the cross gen phase. Obviously a 4090/7900XTX will also hold out pretty well but I do see more RT being a thing and I think the next gen cards will be for RT what the 9700 pro was for AA/AF.

Its obvious that Nvidia doesn't want a GPU to last, sadly it will hurt its buyers, although their buyers are also using excuses like "poorly optimized" or "AMD sponsored" so I expect Nvidia buyers to keep on praising Nvidia for planned obsolescence while touting features like frame generation as necessary even though it makes playing games a worse experience.
And I don't think PC gaming is going to die, but I think its going to become more of a niche as Nvidia is nearly a monopoly and their prices keep going up with no actual price to performance options.

That's another big part, people forget that console settings are perfectly playable even on RX 5600xts now. You just gotta accept low/meduim settings at 1080p, maybe 1440p with resolution scaling turned down.

The whole point of spending more to play on PC used to be getting higher resolution and better textures, but now turning things down to console level is supposed to be fine?

This is PS5/XSX level we are talking about. Medium-high and probably at 1440p on average. And more often than not, 30fps :)
Which is not bad at all in terms of what the games end up looking like.

Yes, PC has much - MUCH - higher ceiling in what you can achieve but it gets expensive and fast.

As they should, its fucking disgusting having $600+ cards with less than 16gb. Literally the only reason i went amd.

Yeah, but since all of these games have memory leaks now, even 24gb isn't going to be enough soon. MW2 was using 22gb.

Can't buy an A6000 commercially either.

From your passion you obviously have belied the narrative by actually owning one and just playing Games. I have a 7900XT and am also quite pleased with the performance. I don't have as much VRAM as you but I have had the 7900XTX as well and it is sweet.

interesting ... i wonder if nvidia will answer with 4080ti with 20gb or 24gb vram...
must say that resident evil 4 with rt enabled result caught me by surprise...
Gosh it would then be $1400 at least as they would have to use AD102 now, and why on earth wouldn't you just get the 4090. Already 4090- is still preferred over 4080. If you've got $1200 you've got $1700. If the 4080- dropped to a more reasonable $899-949, a 4080 Ti on AD102 and 24 MB at $1199 would be reasonable.

Now I'm really curious about the amount of VRAM the RX 7700 series will bring. Let's see if AMD is all talk and no show...
Agreed.

Besides, as much as I agree with AMD's statement, I don't like this "look how bad the other side is" kind of underdog marketing.

Kinda like a been there done that thing

I think its fantastic, fun, and super risky too. AMD did this many times and boy did it backfire on them a lot. Like I said... Popcorn time!
But, its also crystal clear this is a straw they have to grasp at, there aren't that many others... :) So I get what you're saying. This is a sign of weakness just the same as it is a thing...

There is a soccer team in Greece that for many years was winning the championship. The thing is that soccer in Greece was so corrupted, probably still is, just cover the corruption better, that we knew who will won the championship from August, before even it's beginning. The referees where always favoring that team, even trying to help it win, when it was having difficulties. By March that team had already a difference of 10-15 points from the second and the first place secured. Still their fans where always complaining about the referees and where insisting that their team won fair, even going one step further saying that their team was playing under unfavorite conditions(remembering that 1 time out of 50 where they feel they where wronged). Your post reminded me just that.

It wasn't about supporting a different team. It was obvious what was happening. And this happened because the first team in the past secured 20-40 million euros from UEFA. Now that this is not the case, things are different, more competitive.

I haven't been playing close attention, but I think the coach of PAOK still complains about referees every chance he's got :D
Also, hats off to your 2004 European title :rockout:

AMD is desperately trying to sell their cards. According to all the tests, on average the difference between the 4080 and the 7900xtx in regular rasterization is only 2-3%, but they are trying to make it seem like their product dominates with a 10-20% lead everywhere except for five games with ray tracing) It's a pitiful attempt.

Tbh, their products are better than their market share would have you believe. Whether cherry picking numbers is a good way to fix market share... well, they seem to think so.

One aspect people don't talk about, is pricing. Nvidia is constantly accused of artificially inflating GPU prices. If that were true, that would give AMD a huge opportunity to slash $100-200 off of everything and get market share back in no time. But they don't do that.

Yeah, the £1,000 7900 XTX is only 2-3% faster than the £1,300 4080. How pitiful, really!

Use the cards at the resolutions they're intended for and you'll have no problems.

The 3070 is a 1080p card when RT is active and only a 'decent option at 1440p with no RT.
