According to the latest information, it appears that first laptops with AMD Ryzen 7040 series APUs, code name Phoenix, will launch in late April, with U-series coming in May. AMD has previously delayed the Phoenix APUs in order to "align with platform readiness and ensure the best possible user experience," the first notebooks powered by Ryzen 7040HS series processors are expected in April.

According to Golden Pig Upgrade from Bilibili, at least the Ryzen 7840HS will launch on April 30th, and the 7840U SKU is probably expected on May 1st. As noted, AMD has announced the 7040 HS- and H-series SKUs, and has previously briefly mentioned the 15 W U-series SKUs, but has not officially unveiled any specifications. So far, three 7040 U-series SKUs have leaked online. Hopefully, AMD will share a bit more details by the end of this month.

price is going to make these not worth it, its competing with macbook m1 and m2 chips.

so eh...

if I can get one at $449, maybe I would do that. but my guess is cheapest will be $900...

@TheLostSwede any idea on this?

Any idea if Fujitsu is going to release a Lifebook with this? I really could use a new laptop, haha

Apple is not a major cross section for these chips. If you need apple software, you buy apple. When apple embraces openGL and vulkan, then and only then will m series chips be competitive with this.

This chips main competitor is Intel's xe equipped i7s, and amd's previous 6000 series. People who want decent GPU power but not a dedicated chip.

But you knew that already.

LOL. LMAO even. You want a brand new laptop with a brand new phoenix chip for $449?

What moon did you come from? Genuine question, how on earth did you think that was an appropriate price?

I wonder if AMD is having difficulties allocating enough wafers from TSMC. That could explain not just the delay of Phoenix, but also the delay for mid range GPUs.

Paper launch???? Laptops seem to be lacking. Seems there was more choices and better prices during covid.

They're not making much on 4nm, apart from these mobile APU's what else? The wafer costs seem to be probably the biggest issue!

I would like very much to build a new desktop PC with this APU (ZEN4 + RDNA3). I really hope that AMD also releases it for desktop PCs.

I would love to see Strix Point for desktop at least if not Phoenix. Zen 5 + RDNA3+ would be pretty damn impressive and there is talk it can come with v-cache unlike Phoenix.

Of course they will be cheaper than the Intel and Apple ones with which you can't play AAA Games, or CAD rendering or heavy 3D and Video editing applications.
While with this ZEN 4 7040 Phoenix = DDR5 + RDNA 3 + USB 4.0 + HDMI 2.1 + Artificial Intelligence + the new technology FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.0. that you go from 60 Fps to 120 Fps if you can do it and everything in ultrabooks may cost close to $1000 but it's worth it compared to intel and Apple.

All companies are betting on this AMD 7040 APU both in laptops, handheld consoles, etc. It comes out this month, give it time, it is not easy for a much smaller company like AMD to compete against the Intel monopoly.
What we are all clear about is that currently this AMD Zen 4 7040 is far superior to Intel 13 generation and I don't want to talk about RDNA 3 which is 10 times more powerful than the Intel Xe graphics that has not been updated in 4 years. Besides AMD 4nm vs intel 10nm more heat and higher power consumption in intel.

Intel knows this and that's why they are so focused on delivering Meteor Lake laptops in H2 this year. Below is how MTL-H CPU could look like, based on leaked MTL diagram from Igor's Lab. Definitely more advanced and richer connectivity than Phoenix laptops, but will efficiency be on par too?

We need to see a new generation of laptops with three NVMe drives, so that users could create RAID back-ups and have more storage options. Plus, flash NVMe such as XFMEXPRESS card, such as Kioxia design, or CFexpress, would be welcomed.

I don't think we will see it in more than 5 years knowing Intel, which already said just 2 years ago that in 2023 it would be manufacturing 2nm processors.
What we currently see is that in 4 long years Intel's 10nm integrated graphics has not been updated and while AMD has gone from Vega to RDNA 2 and currently RDNA 3 + AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3.0.
Intel is still light years away from AMD, the only difference is that the production of Intel processors is double that of AMD but with the current Zen 4 there is nothing that surpasses it from Intel.

The last iteration of Gen12 Xe LPG graphics will be on Meteor Lake, with 128EUs, matching roughly RDNA2 on Rembrandt's M680.
Arrow Lake should bring Gen 13 iGPU. We shall see how that looks like next year, once in its second iteration as tGPU.

Zen4 laptop SKUs are really strong. M780 is ~25% faster than M680, which is already good for many 1080p games.
