I wish these 4X games had a little more layer to them, in terms of the "dark side" of things. At most, some might have a "black market" or some degree of espionage, but rarely anything more than that. A rare few do have the real extreme stuff such as forced servitude for more workers, or night crawlers to bribe/manipulate others, or assassinations to weaken rivals, but otherwise, it's mostly superficial and doesn't really allow one to occasionally play "bad guy" beyond "generic warlord conqueror".
