Galactic Civilizations IV: Supernova is a 4X turn-based strategy game set in the 24th century where you take on the role of leading a spacefaring civilization that has just developed faster-than-light (FTL) travel. You begin the game with only your home planet and must research new technologies, explore the known galaxy, and colonize new worlds while keeping your people at home happy. At the same time, you will engage in trade, diplomacy, intrigue and war with other alien civilizations. Thanks to the invention of hyperdrive, your people are now ready to discover new worlds, encounter alien civilizations, and learn about the dark history that encompasses them all.

Stardock has released the latest sequel of its award-winning space strategy game series today into early access. Galactic Civilizations IV: Supernova sees the player as the ruler of a united home world that has just discovered faster-than-light travel. Galactic Civilizations IV: Supernova continues a 30-year trend of innovation in the series. This latest sequel introduces AI-generated content OpenAI's ChatGPT technology allowing players to create their own civilizations that uses AI to create the lore, conversation dialogs, quests and more. The game also uses AI, trained on decades of Stardock's alien art to deliver custom graphics for their custom civilization.

"We are thrilled with the new additions that Galactic Civilizations IV: Supernova brings to the genre," said Brad Wardell, CEO of Stardock. "The use of cutting-edge AI technology allows players to generate entire civilizations that look and feel unique with just a few lines of text has us particularly excited."

In this space-based strategy game set in the 24th century, players take on the role of a leader of a spacefaring civilization, tasked with exploring and colonizing the known universe. With an array of new features and improvements, Supernova offers an unparalleled 4X strategy experience for players of all skill levels.

"We've really focused on making the game more approachable to new players," said Wardell. "This is the most sophisticated strategy game we've ever made, so we have put extra time into UI improvements, tutorials and context-sensitive information."

Galactic Civilizations IV: Supernova focuses heavily on replayability. Players can choose several different galaxy setup options, a different opponent to play against and now with the AI generated events and quests, each game will feel like an epic moment in the history of the galaxy.

New features in Supernova include cultural progression, new combat and planetary invasion systems, galactic sectors, new alien civilizations, AI assisted computer opponents, and the integration of ChatGPT and AI art generation. Additionally, the game boasts a multi-sector map design, planetary sieges, multi-turn battles, a host of new weapon designs, starship classes, Terror Stars that destroy entire star systems, and hundreds of other improvements for enhancing the player's ability to build the ultimate space empire.

An interesting idea, but is there anything worthwhile to add to the genre? I mean, after MoO, SC2 and Ascendancy, I have seen nothing but rehashes. Even if some of them were still entertaining.

I don't know if I'm missing anything by not playing Galactic Civ 3 (I do own a copy, but I've never even bothered to install it), but I've played the crap out of the second one and I still go back to it from time to time. I'm not sure how much 3 differs from 2 and if a fourth entry to the series is even needed.

I'd like to see a remake of Ascendancy. I don't know how many hours I spent moving equipment around in the ship designer, but it was fun. :D

Sadly, I didn't have time for the second one. I have a boxed copy, installed it, played it for a bit. But never found the time for even a single playthrough.

Unless they bring something extraordinarily revolutionary then I don't see how it will be able to compete with Stellaris

Iirc, it was all about maxxing your shields and then making sure you pushed the enemy back before they had a chance to do significant damage. But yeah, coming up with designs, finding lane bottlenecks to defend, that was fun.

Having a UI and a feedback loop for the player that doesnt suck donkey balls would be a major step up.

So, basically a GoT with space elves and buzzwords like 'GPT'?
AI for conversation and dialog for custom races is actually one thing it might be good at, and strikes me as an excellent idea, not a buzzword usage.

WTF
It looks practically identical to 3

Stardock, what are you doing... 3 wasn't exactly, let's say, 'stellar'... This happens a lot in space 4X for some strange reason. And yet, like others said, I might still just as well fire up Ascendancy. In MS bloody DOS.

Iirc, it was all about maxxing your shields and then making sure you pushed the enemy back before they had a chance to do significant damage. But yeah, coming up with designs, finding lane bottlenecks to defend, that was fun.
It had so much already... even if the implementation wasn't always great or playable. The potential though. The Lane Blocker tech was one of them... In combat: tractor beams, lots of subsystem disabling tech... And it all still feels immersive to this day, the tech tree as well. Shit was done right, all the way through, the musical score just oozed mystery and sense of discovery. Even the way it handled game turns is to this day kinda revolutionary and often unseen, it had a sense of real-time to it.

Similarly, it had ridiculously looking alien races, and yet somehow it all clicked, to me at least. If I look at the garbled mess of GalCiv's different aliens... what the hell. It's like a parody on itself.

Come on, the AI even gave a disclaimer! Looks perfect IMHO

Unless someone can point out an earlier integration, I'm calling this the start of a new gaming era:

I'm not particularly 'pro-AI/MI', but I've been imagining since childhood video games that provide a dynamic and truly interactive experience.
-Including games almost entirely written (in story, gameplay, and/or coding) "on-demand" and 'seeded' off The Player's inputs/choices.
The Video Game shown in the Ender's Game film, is a fairly close example of what I've been imagining.

Does this mean an internet connection is required to play single player?
Why would that be the case? ChatGPT models don't have to run online.
