Intel : How to make things more confusing for clients ?
Marketing guy : Let's use Ultra, High, Medium, Low instead of "i" before number !
Intel : Excellent idea !

Now we only have to wait for "Intel Core High 3 1060x", or "Core Low 7 1150h" to be announced.
I REALLY hate those new names if it wasn't obvious...

As we want those who got medium or low be sure they could of got better, in fact iif you cannot afford high it make some feel bad to some degree.

I won't mind it if the word Ultra is saved for a top end SKU, like the old extreme chips or current 13900K/S type deal. It has no place lower in the lineup or spread through it imo, numbers are far easier to follow for the majority of a stack but your best product can have a wacky name I spose.

If is interesting to note from the second graphic that this particular Meteor Lake mobile CPU has 18 physical cores. How can that be? Intel has published a diagram of a Meteor Lake (ML) processor as part of the patent application for its L4 (Adamantine) cache. As this diagram (source: Intel plus annotations) shows the L4 cache will be located on the passive (silicon) interposer. The ML tiles or dies as they are called here will be positioned on top of the interposer.

View attachment 294087

This a 2P + 8E chip. Notice that that are two cores in the SOC, marked as SOC-Cores. These are likely to be the Low Power Efficient (LPE) cores that have been rumoured. So to get 18 cores there are 2 cores on the SOC. That leaves 16. The CPU in the diagram has a 64 EU graphics unit, but the 18 core unit has 192 EUs. This suggests a premium unit, so I think the remaining 16 cores would be configured as 8P + 8E.

The other feature to note is the VPU2.7 - this is Intel's AI Engine. It will face competition from Apple's Neural Engine and AMD's shortly to be introduced Dedicated AI Engine on the 7040 Phoenix processor.
Based on various leakers information, meteor lake won't have more than six performance cores.

If you ask me they should get rid of K skus for good first before changing name since most of them have very little to none for overclocking headroom

3,5,7,9 is definitely easier
1,2,3,4 is even better!

Code:
CEO. We need to price higher like nV; their margins are better than ours. Engineers, you need to build faster CPUs.

Engineers. We are struggling with tiktok. We cannot make the CPUs go faster Captain or they will explode.

Marketing. Go faster stripes and RGB, that‘ll work. The kids will love it and pay a premium for rainbow colours.

Engineers. No, you cant see that under a heatsink and fan. And it sounds very BUD to me.

Marketing. Ok. How about a new name like Zoom, whoosh or ultra?

CEO. Is this the best you can do?

Marketing. Yes

Yes, there are leaks are saying six P cores max. This includes a detailed specs leak for the U, P and H range (not the HX models). As the 18 core CPU in the graphic would be 16 without the 2 SOC-Cores, to have 6 P cores it would need 10 E cores. Intel are doing E cores in multiples of 4, so that doesn't work. The current Raptor Lake (RL) HX range for example includes 6 + 4, 6 + 8, 8 + 8, 8 + 12 and 8 +16 combinations. I can't imagine why - particularly if the Ultra tag is being suggested - Intel would not have Meteor Lake equivalents to its current RL HX chips.

I take it you're not aware that patent filings often have misleading information in them? This is to prevent competitors to do what you've done here, guess what future products based around the patent will be like. In a patent, you only have to explain how the thing you're applying for a patent for, works, everything else, can be fake.

Yes of course I am guessing and apparently reliable sources may not be quite what they seem. And some fairly solid rumours turn out to be true, so I could be guessing wrong on those too. Meteor Lake (ML) is slightly different in that Intel made a significant disclosure about it at Hot Chips 34 in August 2022. This includes the slide showing the ML 6 P core mobile processor and I think this slide might be one of the sources of the Meteor Lake is only 6 P cores story. But the 6 P story to me makes no sense if you have the current HX range where most of the processors have 8 P cores.

Well, if we're to believe some of the rumours, Intel will do Meteor Lake for the lower-end parts and a Raptor Lake refresh for higher-end parts.
Too many rumours and a mix of mobile and desktop that doesn't make things easier to figure out.
I guess we might get some more details at the end of the month.

Oh dear, what a waste of effort and needless source of cost, confusion, and cringe.

I know the i doesn't stand for "Intel" but an i5 is easy for even novices to assume is "intel 5" and that just works.

What Intel should really do is to rename the one of the i5 and i7 to Core Ultra Gaming and gamers would be throwing their money at Intel to get one.

Who wants that in 2023? Also no official Windows 11 support.
I sold my Z170 board , i7 6700K and DDR4 memory last year when I did my Alder Lake upgrade.
4 core, 8 thread CPU's are bottlenecks for gaming these days if you have a decent GPU.
