Sunon shows off their new 8mm fans for handheld devices such as phones, PDAs and GPS systems. The fan measures only 8 x 8 x 3mm while airflow and noise level are unknown.

The only problem I can see..... phones have to be durable, I can't imagine new holes and moving parts would help them at all.

I can imagine that in a compact and airflowless environment a little bit would go a long way though.

You've got a point. I know I've used my phone in the rain and it hasn't had a problem and dropped it and abused it a whole bunch. It still works fine, with all the stuff I've put it through I bet the fan would've broke and the whole thing would be dead. Not to mention, if the PSP can get along with passive cooling, why can't a phone? And if a phone needed that much power the battery would last for like half an hour.

I think the fan would need to spin at a high RPM to make it effective thus making it annoying and loud... would be interesting to see what it can do though

Thinking something up and being able to make it are two different things, just trying to make a motor that small is a big challenge.

That fan wouldn't be moving enough air to be annoying. If it moves enough air to cool a small IC which is capable of getting by (just about) on passive, it likely would be moving at maybe 7-8k RPM or maybe much more (the tiny motor from one of those mini-electric RC cars can move at about 25-30k RPM, so these may move at maybe 10k RPM for now), enough to piss you off when moving a larger fan at that speed, but it would likely be inaudible in a small device like a phone, and would probaby blend into the background noise quite easily even with a very quiet PC. Hell, my router's antenna, and my laptop's C2D in power-saving mode emit high-pitched noises that would probably drown out the nosie from that.

Actually, that's one use, mounting a few inside a router to help cool it down (mine gets kinda warm after a few hours, and what with it being an always-on device, the heat isn't good, I know it sometimes drops the connection, might be caused by heat problems), since they're low-power enough, and even just a little bit of air ciculation would surely help, like an exhaust fan, have plenty of benefits.

Mine's running the Aussie firmware, which is compatible with my DS, and with ADSL 2+, unlike the UK one, heheh. I think most of the projects for mine (DSL-G604T, TI Proc @ 150MHz, 4MB RAM, 8MB ROM) are all still alpha/beta, and I like my internet access just fine as it is thanks, heh

Nah not total useless, think about buying a new type of HeatSink and "!FAN!"f for your RAM. I'm not to sure if would provide any performance increase (which it could) but it would look kool. This just opens up new ideas and more opportunities in a world where technology is getting smaller and smaller.
