Leaked Intel Roadmap Casts Doubt on Meteor Lake-S Desktop CPU Lineup

The fate of Intel's Meteor Lake-S desktop CPU lineup has been the topic of much debate since the end of last year - at the time, industry tipsters proposed that part of the product range had been disposed of entirely, but several leaks throughout the course of 2023 have indicated that MTL-S processors were on-track for a launch later in the year - albeit restricted to i3 and i5 offerings. An Intel employee has also confirmed that a new SKU naming system will be implemented as part of the upcoming Meteor Lake lineup - although he did not clarify whether this would encompass both mobile and desktop variants.

An alleged Intel client CPU roadmap has made its way onto the internet, and tipsters think that the information on hand shows that Team Blue has pulled the plug on its Meteor Lake-S (6 Performance and 8 Efficiency cores) desktop processors. The presentation slide was likely authored earlier this month - so these developments are relatively fresh, with provisions for Core S, H, PX, M, U & N series. The heavily redacted infographic maps out product release windows going as far forward as Q4 2026. OneRaichu posits that an Arrow Lake-S (6P + 8E) CPU lineup will replace MTL-S. It is possible that Intel's Raptor Lake-S refresh could serve as an interim release this year, since the Arrow Lake generation is expected to arrive in 2024.

The 2023 Hot Chips event is being held on August 27 to 29. One of the sessions to be presented by Intel is called 'Power management architecture of Intel Meteor Lake', which would fit in with the expectation that ML will be released in the second half of this year. The presentation might give more detail about the range of ML processors.

This leaked roadmap is only referring to desktop Meteor lake chips being cancelled. The hot chips presentation is most likely for the mobile version.

Zen 5 for desktop is expected H1 2024 and possibly Q1. It's Epyc Turin and dense that won't see the light of day until H2. Given it is Intel I won't forecast any release date for Arrow Lake, but fwiw they are aiming for much earlier than November 2024 by all reports. I don't think they want RL-R to fight Zen 5 for too long.

The 6+8 variant no doubt was for use in 14th gen i5 K series and below.Since i5 13600 and below is Alder Lake based, for these specific models probably 14th gen makes sense to be upgraded to Raptor Lake.The question remains for the higher end 14th gen parts that are already Raptor Lake based.These will be upgraded to Meteor or not?

The only recent information about Meteor Lake from Intel was earlier this week (May 24). It was confirmed that the Meteor Lake SOC tile will include a dedicated AI accelerator or VPU (Versatile Processing Unit). This had been rumoured but this is the first time it has been confirmed for sure. Intel went on to say that it aims to "...ship millions of units of Meteor Lake with its dedicated VPU engine over the next year".

There was no statement about what type of CPUs these would be.
