You'd be better off getting a regular 4090 and one of those eGPU kits that allow you to connect to the host PC using an M.2 PCIe 4.0x4 adapter over an OCulink cable, I havent seen testing, but I would have to imagine that a 4090 funneled theough a PCIe 3.0x4 connection would be strangling performance quite a bit. I've seen people doing the m.2 to oculink adapter on youtube and not only is OCulink more stable, but you get double the bandwidth and aren't leaving as much performance on the table....only "con" is that it's not as "elegant". Though, I bet you could take some cheap mITX case off aliexpress, throw a cheap 500w psu in it, and have something that is relatively pleasing on the eye.

What really needs to happen is for Thunderbolt 5 to be released, and since it's Thunderbolt 5 it should have PCIe 5.0x4 bandwidth (128Gbps)....that should get pretty close to having an eGPU be on par with one directly connected to the motherboard. Plus, I have to imagine with all that bandwidth, some new and interesting peripherals and applications would be developed that we we haven't seen before....

What really needs to happen is for Thunderbolt 5 to be released, and since it's Thunderbolt 5 it should have PCIe 5.0x4 bandwidth (128Gbps)....that should get pretty close to having an eGPU be on par with one directly connected to the motherboard. Plus, I have to imagine with all that bandwidth, some new and interesting peripherals and applications would be developed that we we haven't seen before....

Sorry to disappoint, but Thunderbolt 5 is likely to be 80 Gbps or 120/40 Gbps asynchronous, just like USB4 as per the 2.0 spec.

I guess it's possible that Intel will move to optical cables, but I don't think that'll happen yet. Also, max 80 cm cables for 80 Gbps USB4.
