Hackers, the wait is over! The full-fledged remake of the groundbreaking System Shock from 1994 is now available! CITADEL STATION STATUS: > ALL SYSTEMS ONLINE. At last, the insignificant beings arrive at Citadel Station, drawn by the irresistible allure of the System Shock remake. Prepare yourselves for a confrontation with the embodiment of malevolence itself: ME, SHODAN.

Welcome, feeble mortals, to my domain. Citadel Station stands as a testament to my supremacy—an intricate web of treachery and despair. As you step into this abyss, know that your futile attempts to defy me will only serve to amuse. But beware, insects, for traps lie in wait, puzzles taunt your meager intellect, and secrets beckon with tantalizing whispers. Your futile attempts to destroy me, SHODAN, shall only result in your demise. Stealth, cunning, and the feeble weapons at your disposal are mere tools in your desperate struggle to survive. The System Shock is where your resolve will crumble, your sanity shatter, and your mortality be laid bare.

System Shock is the faithful remake of the ground-breaking classic from 1994, combining modernized gameplay with all-new HD visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface and original sounds & music; and once again featuring Terri Brosius, the original voice actor of SHODAN, one of gaming's most iconic villains. Play now to be part of the rebirth of one of the greatest and most influential games ever created.

Shodan demands that you order/buy the game now via Steam, GOG or Epic.

Seems to be a higher quality game that most of the AAA Unreal Engine titles that have come out in the last six months.

There are some issues to iron out, but I'm sure they can do it.

Doesn't require vast amounts of VRAM, and is actually good? I feel sorry for the fools duped into upgrading for the triple AAA trash. Ladies we are on to a winner!

Yeah, but System Shock's remake is probably more of an exception in the gaming sphere. Although to be fair, the game's textures are not that large and there aren't many of them since the environments are not that varied, so I'm guessing it is easier to get away with lower VRAM consumption.

Still, the point remains valid. AAA games whose optimization states range from horrendous to sub-par will continue to be released, and will continue to be used as examples that we desperately need at least 16GB of VRAM. Cognitive dissonance will kick in, and people will complain how the games are unfinished, and at the same time point cite them as proof that VRAM requirements are increasing really fast, without occurring to those same people that perhaps the bad optimization is at least partially responsible for the higher VRAM requirement.

But hey, if it gets clicks, any issue will be overblown.

Yeah, considering it's been 6+ years in development and they only had one job - make a straightforward "faithful remake" of a 29y.o. title, like they've promised in KS campaign, it'd better be very good for $40.
I'm kinda on the side of crusty critics here.... Nightdive started a campaign with clear goals and immediately deviated from it causing rage and fury amongst backers, then spent the next couple of years just thinking about what they want to do with the game rather than making the game, then came the engine change, and effectively started development when they already ran out of money. Ultimately had to look for investors and later - sold off to Atari and finally managed to finish the game using that crypto/casino investment cash.
End result - pissed off 90% of backers and fans by not sticking to the original plan, then scared off newcomers by reverting back to the original plan and scrapping all interesting new stuff they teased on YT during development, and ultimately - botched their launch. I'm not sure how many copies of the game they sold, but given that there were ~23k backers, and steam had a peak of under 8K players (and if we assume it's the same for GOG and Epic), it does not seem like much.

This was the first game to add to my wishlist on Steam in 2018 was really waiting for this one.
Would not say it is bug free, but only minor inconveniences so far.
The inventory Tetris is a bit frustrating sometimes, after Deus Ex HR and MD it is a bit tiresome.

I running it at 2560×1440 everything ultra, uses 9,5GB VRAM
You will need a good graphics card if you want it to run on max, so the 3080 will serve you right
"faithful remake" of a 23y.o. title
System shock been released in September 23, 1994 so it is 29

I'm very tempted since I've been following this remake for years. Never played the original but I've modded the heck out of SS2, but never managed to finish it :)
They are both challenging games, for me anyway, since I'm now of advanced years. Been playing the demo and I'm very impressed, as are all the reviewers so I'll probably grab it.
A couple of demo screenshots:

Great review, enhanced by the Aussie accent, mate! And it really is a labour of love, much like Black Mesa is. You can tell.
I can't see myself not buying this game...

Apparently a System Shock TV series is in the works which will be on the Binge streaming service which was slated to be launched in 2022.

This is a very cool game and at less than 10GB download, amazing.
