MTBF and warranty is worse than current market brands. Unless this is priced well, it doesn't bring new or interesting to the market.

Now Synology has their own HDD, I wonder how long it'll be before they only certify their drives for certain things.

Combined. It's to do with arm actuator wear and read or write wears them equally.

How are they worse when WD Red and Red Plus are 3 years as are Seagate Ironwolf. Only pro versions get 5 years and better write endurance. I'm guessing the Synology HDD are just rebrands of WD Red Plus.

I bet that 8tb (and maybe 6tb) is actually 7200rpm just internally throttled. Vendors need to stop doing that as some of us actually prefer 5400rpm for its noise and power consumption.

Money is the need, Synology gets to make a couple extra bucks rebadging drives and whatever partner they decided to team up with to source the drives (WD, Seagate, Toshiba, not that many manufacturers to pick from) also gets a nice guaranteed boost in sales. They been locking the enterprise systems to first party drives, matter of time till consumer systems gets the exclusive treatment too.

The customer gets screwed but as long as Synology gets to make an extra buck who cares right?
