Robots are already building things like CPUs, too, you know.

This is about designing. You don't need AI/ML to design you a new car, car design is relatively simple and, more importantly, well understood by now. Designing a CPU is much more complex, I would take any help available placing those billions of transistors as efficiently as possible.

I'm not sure living on absolute basic minimum is what I'd call living. Then you'd still have to pay taxes on the stuff you buy, pay for utilities & lots of other things ~ that is contributing something. The biggest issue with these kinda schemes is the "leakages" ~ basically grifting & looting from the bureaucracy & other accomplices up top!

I haven't read details about it (I need to, I know), having lived in a socialist country, I know first hand that giving people any sort of income without them having to work for it, just demotivates everyone. And I mean everyone: people that can cover their basic needs by doing nothing will not want a 9-to-5 because that's a lot of hassle, while capable people will be demotivated to see they are expected to work hard to enable others to live while doing nothing.

Having lived in a socialist country myself, I agree. Although, there's always a handful few who want to go the extra mile for a wealthier lifestyle. There's always some who want to advance the social ladder, become leaders, managers, CEOs, etc. in pursuit of more job satisfaction, or just more money. I, for one, have no such desire, but that's a different matter.

Easy? What other motivation do you have in mind?
I know many people think of money as something dirty, but really money is just what society gives me in exchange for my work, so that I can exchange it for other people's work and fulfill my needs. When I'm working my a$$ off and I see lots of people can cover their basic needs by doing nothing, what would be my new motivation?

I get that people in dire straights need temporary assistance. But when you say "universal", that's scary to me.

Exactly. Not working 40 hours a week doesn't necessarily mean more idle time, but more time for hobbies. We as a society are so used to doing things that we don't want to do, things that bring zero benefit into our lives except for money, that we can't imagine what life would be like without doing those things.

By now you should be buried under an avalanche of comments due to the fact that the 2023 World Artificial Intelligence Conference is taking place in China. I'm surprised there aren't any.

I can't wait till AI starts addressing the really hard problems. For example, and this was in Big Bang Theory: if a zombie bites a vampire and then the vampire bites a human, what does the human turn into?
